Social media is steadily growing, but Facebook usage dips.

It's not just about censorship, but competition and data protection. Imagine a billion + Chinese citizens giving their personal data away to the US Gov. That is what happens with the dominance of Facebook, Twitter, Google etc.

Whats impressive about it is not the amount of phones but the wiring of the planet. A phone doesn't work just like that out of the blue - it needs a nearby mast/tower which in turn in no good unless there is an internet to hook up to.

AnonD-484745, 15 Jun 2017Why exactly are Facebook, Twitter, etc. banned in China? In China, Facebook was blocked following the July 2009 Ürümqi riots because Xinjiang independence activists were using Facebook as part of their communications network. Some Chinese users also believed that Facebook would not succeed in China after Google China's problems. The popular Renren social network (formerly Xiaonei) has many features similar to Facebook, and complies with PRC Government regulations regarding content filtering. Twitter is blocked in China; however, many Chinese people use it anyway. Facebook not blocked in Hong Kong or Macau. However, Facebook, Twitter and Youtube counterparts; Weibo, RenRen and Youku succesfully exist in China.
