LG prepping a smartphone CPU of its own, grabs an ARM license

26 April, 2011
The megapixel race of yesterday is the smartphone processor race of today and it seems every one wants in. Today it's LG's turn to get all serious about CPUs as it just got the license to use the ARM Cortex CPU...

AnonD-5197, 27 Apr 2011If you pay attention to detail, 1.2 GHz dual-core is what I... moreLol...... it's quite apparent that u r really a big samsung fan.
Qualcomms r actually better than samsung processors.
Qualcomm 1Ghz processors have always scored upto 65 fps in benchmarks while hummingbird is just stuck on 55 fps. And If hummingbird was so good than why did samsung galaxy s lags like hell.
Even the new exynos processor can't compete with tegra 2 and OMAP4 in terms of gaming performance. Exynos(dual core) scored just abt 60 fps in neocore. Isn't that just pathetic for a dual core processor ???
Need more info -> htc phones based on new dual core qualcomms r scoring really great even in their very early pre production benchmarks and when announced they r gonna tear exynos upside down.
Now be happy with ur samsung and don't show more of ur samsung fanboyism.

I'm sure they're choosing not to upgrade the CPU to what Samsung is using for various reasons such as profit margin, target audience, contracts, and feature priority and more. Sony, HTC and LG are all from countries where semiconductor manufacturing is best in the world.

abhi, 26 Apr 2011If u know anything abt phones than u must be knowing that l... moreWhat I found through bit of researching is that Qualcomm chips are pre-produced and sold to mobile device manufacturing companies to be installed on their devices while Samsung and Apple customize the chips to serve their devices' needs. I'm not the most knowledgeable person in this field, but by LG producing their own chips implies that they will be customizing the new chips to carry-out only the necessary tasks which I can safely assume it will improve the performance of their devices. This can hardly be considered an "idiotic move" by LG.

I think you need bit more researching before assuming I don't know much about phones...

where is it written as "end of 2012 " ??? show me.
the report said that there will be dual core 2 ghz phones BY 2012, which means most probably their next galaxy will have one. Samsung is not at all lagging behind in competition. samsung's own hummingbird was the fastest of its time. now the 1.2 ghz dual core exynos is the fastest in a smartphone. so where is samsung lacking ?? they are leading it if you'd ask me !
samsung is probably the only manufacturer that can make their own screen, processor, nand memory, SoC and most internal components. others like apple, SE, HTC, moto, lg etc lack the engineering capability to do so.

abhi, 26 Apr 2011If u know anything abt phones than u must be knowing that l... moreIf you pay attention to detail, 1.2 GHz dual-core is what I said. I don't find HTC phones good enough because of their screens anyway. Samsung did very well with their own chips with Galaxy S, and I think LG will do well making their own chips too. I'm just surprised because their TI OMAP did very well on benchmark.

If you know anything about mobile device processors, then you would know Hummingbirds were significantly faster than Snapdragons. Hummingbirds were also said to have best power efficiency as well. I obviously don't know how the new Qualcomm processors will stack up against Exynos, but that's to be determined later. I don't even know the name of the new Qualcomms...

HTC phones waaaaaayyyyyyyyy better than Samsung phones? In what aspect? I don't understand how you are making that assumption when past comparisons say that chips in Samsung phones were better than Chips in HTC phones. Qualcomm can claim that their processors will be the best when it comes out, but we don't know that until it's out and we test it. Besides, it's about half a year away from 2012, everything can change.

Samsung it's one of the major creators and manufaturers of Arm processors of our days. Nor LG nor Motorola, there by being the first dual core phone makers remember that they not used their own technology for develop and manufacture Arm processors for their Smartphones, it was Nvidia. Samsung has Exynos, and will have Exynos 2, as had Hummingbird and others cpus.

Very nice, very nice. (Only reason why I want dual-core phone is the battery usage of those) Atleast 1Ghz dual-core, 1Gb-768Mb ram, 32Gb Rom, 2100mAh battery (change able), MicroSD-slot (HC or XC support), 4-inch screen (atleast 800x480, better 960x640) [No matter if S-LCD or Oled, LCD better], maybe backlighted keyboard, 12MP camera with Xenon flash. There wouldn't be better phone. Design of E7 and Android 3.0. Would get a lot of buyers with price of $500. Waiting for that thought ;D

Lg is really a big idiot. Copying samsung in making processors is not a good idea at all. Samsung said that around end of 2012 they will show a 2Ghz dual core processor based phone but it clearly shows that samsung is lacking a big time.
Other companies like qualcomm and nvidia will bring out 1.5 Ghz quad core processors at end of this yr while 2.5 Ghz quad core processors at starting of 2012.
It's better to buy processors from these companies rather than making ur own and start lacking in terms of competition.

No body needs dual core and multi GHz, if your screen is only VGA size and you do not edit 1080p resolution movies on the fly. This is typical excuse to sell phone for higher price, without any real user benefit.
