No Sony laser projector build in? Sad. Sony has the technology (Sony MP-C1A) and competitors showed already smartphones in China (Qualper Q1 and Ragentek VogaV). Sony needs something new to compete with Apple & Samsung.

Long and slim., 20 Jun 2017Android users laugh at iPhone 5, the remote control phone.
... moreThis is because iPhone 5 don't comes with spilt screen features at that moments.. And now the split screen is available on Android Nougat.
To me, maybe I will stay with 16:9 in smartphone, because split screen actually more potential on 8 inch tab or 10 inch tablet.

Btw 18:9 is still better than 21:9 to me. Split screen with two perfect squares like on lg g6 looks great.

AnonD-632062, 20 Jun 2017LCD display, 6 inch and 1080p resolution. Yup, it's for one... moreThough it's not natively 6" because of a different ratio, I don't think 1080p resolution isn't really bad still.
Others may have 2K screen only to give almost no difference to the quality of the display.
Either the XZ1 might have this similar display but now is 4K HDR like the XZ Premium, and Sony will come up with an even better resolution for the next Premium flagship, possibly an SUHD resolution.
But Xperia/s with CLEDIS display/s will surely be the happiest day of my life, just because I know that no one can touch Sony for that, except those who migrate to their technology.

Would really be great to make use of the unusable screen space on the screen when consuming contents that can't be stretched to 18:9.
Some quick options like screenshot, toggle flashlight, switch to a different app, showing date and time/reminders/notifications/battery percentage, etc, ala-LG second screen, rather than wasting the extra space for nothing.
An always present software keys would also be nice.
You know, just to clutter the extra unused screen with great functions just to not make the user feel like a large portion of the display is wasted.
Obviously there also should be an option to not have them for those people who don't want it, but for such multitasking person like me, this is definitely gonna be a great match for me.

AnonD-39937, 20 Jun 2017should I remind you that most photos are shot in 4:3 aspect... more"should I remind you that most photos are shot in 4:3 aspect ratio because it's better than 16:9 in most situations?"
That must be why almost all professional cameras use a 3:2 ratio...

AnonD-673506, 20 Jun 2017wouldn't 2:1 be the ratio?2:1 would be the ratio, but amazing as this will sound I've seen people try to justify the innumeracy of calling it 18:9 because they think it makes it easier to compare with 16:9.
As far as I'm concerned anyone writing 18:9 loses a lot of credibility on the spot.

Why do y... more"Lots of videos have black bars on regular screens
Why do you have to complain a lot"
90% of Youtube videos have 16:9 aspect ratio and no black bars...and when people hear of videos on phone they think of Youtube and the Galler y(which has 16:9 videos you recorded), 99% won't see Avatar on their phones in order to have black bars...+ not even TVs, which are used a lot to watch movies don't have movie aspect ratio, they also have 16:9...18:9 is nothing more than a Gimmick to make us think it's something "new" and "innovative".

Ohh it will be really a huge miracle (finally) if we'll see a Sony device (flagship or not) with this kind of display. Apart from QHD/2K & UHD/4K, this FHD/1080p display ("Full active") will definitely be truly amazing on a Sony device. And in fact, metaphorically speaking, Sony needs this kind of display, like the desert needs the rain.

Anonymous, 20 Jun 2017You're wrong.. ALL movies are in 21:9 format.. 18:9 is good... moreSorry, I meant 21:9 VIDEOS are rare.
Some movies are made in 21:9 and some in 16:9... but hands-down 16:9 is the more popular aspect ratio when it comes to Videos.
I'm an owner and modder of a Samsung Galaxy Note. Yes, the first.
And I have MultiWindow working on it, even though it shouldn't work on it.
I have used it, and use it. But I am the NICHE.
MOST people don't use MultiWindow on a phone... the screen's too small.
You totally misunderstood my point. I didn't say get rid of MultiWindow. I was saying let's not make the phone's display's Aspect Ratio based on the use of MultiWindow, because it is a Niche. If you have a 16:9 phone, and you have the Notifications Bar and the Nav Bar... then the space gets smaller, eg: 14:9 usable space. So when you divide that up equally, you have 7:9 box for each Window. It's not ideal but it still works. Compared to a 21:9 that would give you something like 9:9 box for each Window. Obviously for this single use case, the 21:9 works out better. However, since MultiWindow is a feature that's used rarely even by power-users... it works out better to compromise slightly for Multi-Window rather than compromise for Daily Use.
As for VR, it is better to have a VR Headset which has the display built-in. The phone solution works, but not very well/ideal. So a VR use case has little to no bearing on the Aspect Ratio of a phone's display. I mean, even the best Daydream/GearVR cannot match the fit, polish, and performance of the PS4VR, let alone the Facebook ORift or Steam Vive.
Trust me, you do not want an unnecessarily long phone. Or an unnecessarily wide one.
It's about finding the balance, and 16:9 is the best compromise.
I wish it wasn't, I wish the Europeans defeated the Americans in this aspect and Standardised "Root 2" (aka 1.4142) as the dominant Aspect Ratio like A4 paper. It works better for tablets and laptops. It's better for UI/UX designers. And it can scale Pixel-Perfect as the industry progresses. I have given this A LOT of thought, and I'm a power user, the niche.
