OnePlus 5's tele camera only has 1.6x optical zoom, digital zoom brings it to 2x

22 June 2017
Carl Pei & co. still claim the flagship offers "2x lossless zoom" (though not optical).

Specc is one thing but reality is something else.
In my experience in past i had several Samsung's, Sony, iPhone, Xiaomi and now I'm with OP 3T (6G/128G)
This is by far the most responsive and clean experience of them all and battery life is second only to Redmi note 3pro (4100mAt-SD650) wich i could nit drain in one day no matter what i do.

OP5 should be even faster then OP3t and battery still about the same.
Its amazing phone but im not happy for the price noch upward and that's it.
So stop bashing it for no reason.

Wasn't OnePlus 5 supposed to be smaller than 3T? Right... it is 1.5mm TALLER. OnePlus is all marketing and hype.

This does not surprise me. OnePlus has from the beginning been more hype than reality. Yes they make nice phones, but they always fall short in ways that OnePlus tries to pretend aren't true.

I thought right away that the telephoto use of the dual camera is gimmicky and ridiculous with such tiny lenses. Of course it's only 1.6x zoom. In a 7mm thick phone how can you possibly have any real telephoto to speak of? It would have been much better to do something like on the Essential Phone, to use the second lens and sensor to capture more light and improve the quality of the photos.

I am also not surprised that the whole designed in conjunction with DxOMark thing is bogus. DxOMark, when it comes to the phone camera ratings, is essentially a marketing company providing questionable ratings to help manufacturer's promote new phones (whatever the latest phone to come out is, DxOMark always says it's the "best phone ever"). You can't get a good camera by having a marketing company help you design it.

This is just all the typical OnePlus lameness. People should not be surprised.

That's why people (read OnePlus/manufacturers) must always state the true characteristics of what they are selling, if everyone was informed of how this worked then no-one could have complained the times it went wrong.

While its "strict sealing design" and the "thickening process" employed on the back corners are reminiscent of tactics applied by such companies as Apple, Samsung, Oppo, and vivo, some connectors inside the OnePlus 5 aren't fixed with metal plates which means they could get loose. This is especially true for the camera connector.

Despite the 1.33x optical zoom, there seems to be another misunderstanding from the media: Lossless zoom is actually possible without a zoom/tele lens. As far as I know Pentax and Olympus (High Resolution Mode) already do this. They shift the sensor by a few micrometers and capture multiple images. So they can capture detail between the pixels as well as decreasing the noise. This way a 16 megapixel sensor can capture as much detail as a 40 megapixel sensor (a 16 megapixel crop would be equivalent to 1.6x zoom if the lens is sharp), even with less noise. You also get a raw file with this advantage. Though currently this only seems to work well with static subjects and with a tripod.

By the way: Also Google's HDR+ decreases noise and increases the amount of detail, so compared with HDR+ Off, you get a tiny bit of lossless zoom as well.

well, this may lead to a price reduction sooner than expected.

Ok so you're not satisfied with the camera , the phone comes no where close to most other flagship brands , where cost is concerned, my point is , if you're going to buy a Mini don't complain that it doesn't run like a Rolls Royce, look how far apple has come since it launched,. No were, still the same old GUI one plus will become a company to recon with, watch this space,

                                  Hmmm... that's why then.

So the amount of detail is probably not much more than 9 megapixels at 2x (if the lens was extremely sharp).
