Yea this 2:1 ratio really blows. Been waiting for some improvements on the Mate phone .. then everyone wants to copy LG's real estate subtractions to accommodate the smaller FEMALE hands...

AnonD-647900, 07 Jul 2017"A 6" 18:9 screen would be taller than what the Mate 9 has,... moreYes, you are right. For a 6" phone (6" diagonal), the total screen area for a 6" phone in 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio is about one square inch smaller than than when the phone is in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio. Furthermore, the human visual field is a maximum of around 180 degrees horizontally (rolling your eyes to the leftmost and rightmost of your peripheral vision) and around 100 degrees from the topmost to the bottom. That translates to an aspect ratio of about 1.8 maximum. In reality, the typical human field of vision is somewhere between 4:3 (old CRT tv ratio) and 16:9 (regular widescreen tv). Simply put, 18:9 and higher screen ratios (18.5:9) in phones do not make for a pleasant human viewing experience. Phones with these stupidly wide aspect ratios deserve to die a quick death.

"A 6" 18:9 screen would be taller than what the Mate 9 has, but narrower than it and with less surface area overall," if that's the case then they should stick to the conventional ratio.

I agree.
18:9 must die a quick death.
Keep the Mate 10 using a 16:9 aspect ratio - PLEASE.
I will NOT buy one if they follow LG and Samsung and make the 18:9 (2:1) mistake.

YetAnotherUserName, 06 Jul 2017I will hate it. I love my Mate 9. Lovely screen, superb bat... moreSamsung S8 & S8+ have 18.5:9 aspect ratio. It's an even wider aspect ratio in phones that deserve to die like the 18:9 ratio. I can see why hardware manufacturers call it 18:9 ratio rather than 2:1: They want to project the illusion of a pleasant, panoramic, ultra large, ultra wide screen (superlatives). If they were to use 2:1 in describing the aspect ratio of the phone, it would instantly wake up potential buyers and leave a bad taste in the mouth because one can easily picture how utterly distorted a phone looks with the screen stretched twice as long as it is wide.

Anonymous, 06 Jul 201718:9 ratio again? When will phone manufacturers realize tha... moreI will hate it. I love my Mate 9. Lovely screen, superb battery, excellent fast fingerprint sensor, logically placed for 95% of usage. Screen as good as my new Samsung Galaxy Tab S3.
I rarely watch videos but I do use the phone a lot. A narrower screen is NOT what I need - if anything I'd rather go back to 3:2 (or should I say 16:11-ish?) which I had way back when I used a dumb phone and a pda.
Is been looking forward to an updated version but if it is 18:9 (why don't they say 2:1?), it will never get into my hands.

18:9 ratio again? When will phone manufacturers realize that this stupid ratio serves no meaningful purpose with 99.9% of youtube movies, photos/camera and games, not going 18:9 anytime soon. If I want to hold a phone easily with a single hand, I am buying a 5.0" phone in standard 16:9 aspect ratio and not some stupid 6.0" phone that pretends to have a big display wasting screen space with horrid black bars or displaying full screen of people in movies/photos with chopped off heads and feet. To add insult to injury, users who use their phones mainly for social media or to read ebooks, news or browse websites are going to hate the cramped reading experience.

I got Mate 9 a couple months ago after OnePlus 3t's screen broken. I love this phone very much... I can say this is the best phone I ever have so far, I've use many brands before; htc, moto, samsung, lg, iphone 6s. I will be excite to see how mate 10 go. But I plan to rock this 9 a year or 2 unless the screen is broken again (and expensive to fix).
