Google might soon update Pixel devices with always-on mode for Ambient Display

06 July 2017
XDA found source code in early Android O builds that support the idea.

Yes it is possible to ad "always on" an a phone with TFT screen via software update but battery life will be sacrificed as TFT used LED back lighting which all of them will light to see anything on the screen while OLED can light individual pixle's thus, almost no battery drain

Google own Pixel phone, Google also own and develop Android.

Either the programming was included in whatever the latest Android API, or Google issued a very small update if its own (as owner) and turned on the facility

That means that that all flagship phones can do the same

The sad part is that 50% of the 4 operating systems are two abandoned by the manufacturers

I was talking about the upcoming Pixels, because those are the ones that will support Always-On Display, not the previous ones, because it is impossible to implement AOD on a TFT screen without hardware support (LG G5 and G6 have special hardware for AOD). And the next small Pixel will be made by HTC, while the next large one will be made by LG.

The larger, LG-built Pixel will probably have an Always-On Display mode (it's only logical given that LG has the expertise from the G5 and G6), but I don't think the smaller, HTC-built Pixel will have it.

                  Oh better.

10 years ago all mobile phones had always-on mode. They just turned off the LCD background light, but the LCD stayed on with the clock and other icons and the ambient light illuminated the display.

Blackberry BB10 have this, there is a notification red light also.

It is a nice feature to have and not need to unlock the phone.

This is what Google Android needs, editable field names so one contact can be held under one contact card
Instead of mobile 1, 2, 3, you can change it to Pete X main, Pete X payg, Pete Work, and if Pete has a home phone, Pete home, so you don't have to remember what phone goes with what number goes with which

This was on Symbian only, not picked by Windows or Android.
