Now I really think we are thinking in different layers.... moreYes, you definitely think in, by your admission, "different layers" if you expect that stereoscopic display from the (poor) stereo digicam integrated into a phone... would somehow enhance the ability of augmented tools to show coffee shops hidden behind corners.
And it just so happens that I am... at least much closer to an expert than you (studied physics, also - which includes optics - and I'm big into cinematography and photography: I actually MADE stereoscopic photos with an equipment I improvised - have you?). It's frustrating how many people again temporarily swallow the marketing push for "3D" (FYI, with the workings of the _stereoscopy_ technique not improving at all since its last flops), coming from managers panicked about their inability to see new development paths (like it was the last times they pushed stereoscopy - when emergence of TV was going to end cinema, when emergence of VHS was going to (again) end cinema, when HD was going to (again) end cinema, when "2D" photography got too inexpensive and available for their liking). Possibly giving the "3D" moniker even worse perception, when stereoscopy will again flop.
All the while people barely even realize the existence of things much more deserving of "3D" - actual holograms for example, and how fabulous they look & feel when held (heck, I've seen people scream "fake!" at a video recording accurately demonstrating how a proper hologram is perceived)

Second, augmented reality is all about discovering MORE than you see, like there is a coffee shop round the corner or some cool concert going on the next street. You may say that it is impractical to apply 3D into it, but it is definitely an innovation. Third, it is always great to move forward and 3D did evolved from the past. Fourth, even you may hugely disagree with, digital devices are taking over and the availability is huge, not to say the much higher quality of contents.
My opinion should seems shallow to you and I have limited knowledge about the long history of the subject. Maybe this is a start of a new breakthrough or "sunk and forgotten" like before, it is good to be optimistic. That's all I have to say.

I am just talking about the workability of augme... moreWriting about stereoscopy is very much "sticking with the article", whatever you'd like to think (what, just because for a change I point out _problems_ with the workability, numerous historical examples of them? Because I'm not among the new wave of faithful in the very _limited_ technique of stereoscopy? NVM how most of them barely realize its age)
How you don't realize it was relatively easy and inexpensive to order Viewmaster slides from your own stereoscopic material just shows how little people care, in the end (those who make and display cherished and awarded "great photos" also don't care, which you of course chose to overlook)
And you really swallowed the bait if you're serious about "a more immersive REAL TIME experience when finding more about the environment" - or did you just forget that the people using such augmented gimmicks WOULD BE ACTUALLY THERE? (free to experience the environment as a real 3D, not filtered via very _limited_ stereoscopy on a minuscule screen - generally wanting to take away their eyes from it as soon as possible, to enjoy the real thing)

I am just talking about the workability of augmented reality app combined with 3D technology. Not the long-term development of stereoscopic photos.....
Augmented reality is still a fun gimmick thing nowadays and the functionality is still not fully extended. I think mobile 3D display can let the mass experience a more immersive REAL TIME experience when finding more about the environment (I believe they did a lot of testing to ensure the quality). It have the potential to serve as an alternative to ordinary map apps.
I think the author wrote "As far as augmented reality apps go, you can't beat a 3D screen, that's for sure." because 3D is far superior and real than watching 2D street views on screen. And I agree to that point.
About stereoscopic photos, I don't know whether you are about the hidden shapes in picture books, two parallel photos, specially layered motion cards or just photos with blue and red bezels. The main failure for all previous attempts are the public access to them. People are unable to create those special images and they always need tools or skills even to view them (3D glasses, create far focal point etc.).
But things moved forward!! It is digital age and people are getting control of their own 3D contents. Furthermore, we can see 3D effects with bare eyes on the screen (that's what this phone does). I believe these advances bring all the differences.
Now that's just off-topic. Just stick with the article man.

LG Optimus 3D is a beast. It has all the features that I always wanted especially 3D. I will buy this phone over any other phones, even the Samsung Galaxy S II.

I have no problem with LG. Current LG smart phones are way ahead of competition (maybe except SAMSUNG / HTC which make good SFs too). My LG Renoir was very reliable.

It's on android Market already! :) download and enjoy guys... they say that it has some compatibilty issues with some HTC devices; like Wildfire, Legend...

Flea, 10 May 2011Replying about your first point, actually I think it is not... morePeople very much don't hold their phones _exactly_ the same way every time (nvm when holding them up - google "gorilla arm"). Which is required by parallax barriers that such screens use (in many different arm positions, when pointing at surroundings...). People most likely won't bother.
Just like they didn't bother every single time stereoscopy was pushed on them; it proved numerous times to be a passing fad.
Making stereoscopic photos is quite inexpensive and easy for a few decades already - but do you know ANYBODY making those, placed in personal albums, etc.? And in fact, when you look at cherished and awarded "great photos" ("artsy" ones, photojournalists, events, nature, space, etc.) NOT ONE of them exploits stereoscopy for the impact they have on us.

Yes the Optimus 3D needs the specific distance and angle to view 3D best. But aren't people watching a normal screen at about the same way? As augmented reality solely depends on the view of camera; it will be pointless watching the display at alternative angles as the image always stays the same if the phone is not moved. After all, a person can use the function just like normal phone models as you always put it in front of you at eye level.

Such type of screen as used on LG, requires very precise alignment of the face in relation to the screen, keeping it very "centred" - which seems quite awkward when also holding it up, for augmented app to work at all.
And Flea, such "3D" (stereoscopy, really) has been pushed on us numerous times over the last 150 years (yes! It's barely younger than "2D" photography); always mostly ignored in the end. Not the least because it probably bets on wrong subset of hints in trying to convey depth, and does some of them very _wrong_ (shattering relation between focus depth and apparent depth of an object, having very incomplete parallax)

Firstly, 3D does not mean 360 degrees view but things popping out of screen! Moreover, the 3D display is a UNIQUE tech to show 2 different images to each of your eyes; not something that will come to other ordinary screens (Why people would buy this if it can be done in other phones c'mon it's the selling point).
Secondly, augmented reality is not the main point here and I know it is gaining age. The important thing is that in addition to augumented reality ("3D" illusion on-screen - yea it is 2D basically), REAL LIFE 3D is also there! Which means the signs and streets are getting right out of the display screen!! Surely you can't find that from any other devices.
If you still don't know what I am saying, you really are messing up the concepts behind the techs.

What IS so special about a 3d display? i mean what i see on that browser up there is more like a smart perspective design, it seems possible on EVERY phone.....
even the pictures taken by that phone and the way it shows them are not that special, it's all about good software...
so im curious, what is so special about the display? cuz to me it's more like smarter softwares that will do the same thing on any other phone

samsung wave already have apps with augmented reality.
one of them is "I-Direction".same thing which is LG is showing here.
