ZiiLABS introduces two new CPUs for Android tablets - the ZMS-20/40

11 May, 2011
It seems that a competitor to the Tegra 2 and Exynos chips has just entered the tablet competition. Meet the dual-core ZMS-20 and quad-core ZMS-40 from ZiiLABS. The ZMS-20 is clocked at 1.5GHz...

This is the kind of technology Nokia wont dare to touch.

The "6GHz" comes from the "aggregated" 4*Cortex A9@ 1.5GHz in ZMS-40. There won't be any Cortex A9 @ 6GHz, this was only PR trash talk.

Also the "100" cores come from simply adding the 96 "Stemcell" cores to the 4 Cortex A9 in ZMS-40. 96+4 = 100. Also, a lame term to use.

The ZMS family have no real GPU (as in, there are no fixed-function TMU and ROP units), so even though those 48\96 cores may actually be powerful for pixel/vertex shading, many of those cores will have to be occupied in doing software rendering (like Sony wanted to do with Cell in PS3), and they won't be very efficient at that.

That said, this SoC may have excellent results for video decoding and OpenCL processing, but it'll probably have very bad 3D rendering performance, just like its predecessors.

I love Android , but I hate touchscreens , touch makes no sense in buisness , typing and heavy usage .
I'll just stick to Symbian 3rd Until they release Android-Keypad version or something like that ! :)

My phone history is: Motorola (old slim candybar) -> Nokia 5125 -> Motorola (reliable basic flip phone) -> Nokia 6103 -> Blackberry (flip > Storm2 > Bold)...

And now I will move to Android with Motorola Atrix once again... Maybe if Nokia were with Android it would be more appealing...

"Its architecture however is supposed to scale up to 6GHz and should support up to 100 cores. What? Those are some mind-blowing numbers."

I think zii labs couldn't explain the spec sheet properly. ZMS-40 cannot support up to 100 cores in a mobile with the current level of technological excellence humans possess. I am 90% sure that the processors here are in-execution SOC's. Rather then out-execution SOC's. And when they support up to 100 cores they may mean processing threads, although each core cannot have more then 4 processing threads. For a quad core processor that's 16 pt's. I am really puzzled cause even if they were SPU's instead of Actual CPU cores, no way can they put 100 of them on a mobile chip (in this respect I also see the chip fabrication size is not mentioned). If they could every other mobile chip maker would go out of business overnight.
                    I will look into this.

[deleted post]Yes. I miss the glorious days of Nokia but they moved too slow to capitalize on the momentum they had when they launched the N95. Now they lost their crown, their prestige, fell behind, and let the competition catch up and overtake them. Someone working inside Nokia sabotaged the company from the inside. Their current line up would have been great 3 years ago and they should have jumped on the Android bandwagon. It's the cumulative mistakes, arrogance and misjudgment of the Nokia top brass that did them.

sure this summer is really getting so hot! because to this latest technology and innovation there will be always a competetive products. Thanks to the team who do there work for this tremendous chips. I can't imagined how can it performed, the last time i heard the thing dualcore and quadcore is on my p.c. But now it conquering the phone. Wow! A million like to you guys. Really great job.

Forget about the cpu's ..just make good software with no lag and errors ( like ios witch moves flawlessly at the touch of your fingers ) and no limitations like android .. hardware is not that hard to make ..software is . Just think for a moment if google haven't of camed up with android witch is the main competitor for ios ...what would samsung ,sony ericsson, lg , acer , dell, and nokia why not ..etc would of done??? optims 2x ..galaxy s 2 are great phones ( exept the cheap plastic ) but they would of been dead without google's android..with out good software great hardware is nothing .
