Very interesting indeed! This would need a high 916MHz to put it on par with the Exynos 8895 in a 12-core configuration. This is a very high frequency that will likely come at the expense of power draw -- so while it may perform as the Exynos does, I don't expect that battery life under load would be as enticing.

But this part can be sold on "paper" very effectively, as a relatively small 12-core GPU will cost less to manufacture than a larger 20-core GPU. For casual users that need a burst in speed, or for markets that don't emphasize battery life, this part could be very popular.

I expect that the next Exynos at 10nm LPP will likely bump perf up by 20% to 40%, and likely use the Mali G72 will will include larger caches, more efficient layouts, and reduce energy consumption. Such a chip will comfortably compete at the top of the heap as the 8895 does currently.

But I don't think that the Kirin 970 is positioned as a premium part. Perhaps a mid-tier SoC with lofty capabilities, capable of matching some of the best in performance.

Good news. The Mate 10 will definitely be really interesting, with its Kirin 970 SoC and the (rumored) dual cam setup Leica. Additionally, okay, all the previous years had their/its main protagonists. But this year probably is/will be one of the most, with competitors such as: the Note 8, V30, Nokia 8 (Carl Zeiss), Pixels 2 (mostly XL), iPhones (7s, mostly 8) this Mate 10 (Leica), Moto Z2 (Force) as well, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 and so on. Who knows which one will have/offer THE BEST CAMERA???? (& obviously, overall too).
