Anonymous, 30 Jul 2017Never heard of Sharp Aquos Crystal series from 2014..? Yeah, Ive used an S8 in person. It looks a bit more flashy than a flat screen, but i found it difficult and annoying to use. I don't care all too much about how the phone looks, I care more about ease of use and overall performance, especially battery life and durability.

If I could, I'd go flat any day. But my S7 flat has slightly curved screen, which prevents me from installing ANY glass protective screen, I'm limited to rubbery films only. My LG G2 didn't have any sort of protector and in 2.5 years I managed to put several scratches on it, at least one of them is rather deep (visible when the screen is on under certain angles. Replacing the screen costs $200 at least (most of the time it would be about half of phone's price) compared to $30 for a replacement protective glass. Besides, protective glass can be swapped in a year and your device will look brand new again.

But you can't have protective glass over any type of curved screen. It either won't cover curvature, leaving sides unprotected and making them hard to use, or will "peel off" the corners, leaving air gap along the edge of the device, making those sides, again, far less responsive, and it will look rather bad. There are some companies who claim to have made perfect glass protectors for my screen but users report that glass makes edges unresponsive.

On the other hand, a lot of cheap phones have curved screens (to some extent), and they may be so cheap you'll throw it away in half a year or a year, for such users curvature may be a cool thing.

I would prefer a flat screen, rather than a curved edge. For one, they distort the edges; two as someone said they are fragile and getting accessories for them is difficult !.

A thin bezel is preferred but not a curved edge.

                    PS: I own S7 Edge.

Don't understand why Samsung didn't keep both curved and non-curved flagship phones so they can have more both customers.

Slightly curved edge screens could be used ergonomically to reduce side bezels, if they just went a little into the curved glass and not almost halfway around the side of the frame.

Your opinion is just as valid as others however you need to accept people have different opinions too. The S8 form factor is nothing to write home about and I personally prefer flat screens. There isn't a better option, just what suits you.

To those who bash on curved screens, you obviously haven't seen or held a Samsung S8 in person yet, which you should, cause say what you want... it's really awesome, beautiful to look at. A real technological marvel to admire. Stop being so negative n grumpy ppl...

However, once you used/held it for a while... you cannot deny that the curved screen feels fragile, much more difficult to hold & operate, one handed or both (again, go try the S8, ya have to baby it even with a case on) and serves little to no purpose at all, if anything, it makes your video watching experience annoying and distorted (good luck trying to look at the news ticker/subtitles when viewing shows)

Curved screen is just beautiful but fragile and useless gimmick. Flat screen is more durable and easy to replace.

Basically, the best thing is how it is now, and therefore, that we (all customers/ consumers, etc), have both options available. So everyone can choose easily what they prefer, if you prefer a curved screen so buy an S8's, Note 8's etc (onwards). And who prefers a flat screen, just don't buy an S, Note, etc. just buy one with a flat screen, obviously there is a whole list to choose from.

AnonD-227943, 30 Jul 2017Flat screens are just better all round. Their also cheaper... moreNo one had a problem holding a 25mm thick phone, when they were half of the width of current smartphones. And they were still called bricks.
For the smartphones the thickness should be 10mm tops.
Still, heavily rugged S8 Active is supposed to be 9.9mm thick and hold 4000 mAh of power, while being pretty close to regular S8 dimensions.
Some manufacturers pushed it even further. Lenovo P2 has 5100 mAh battery while having 5.5" screen and "only" 8.3 mm thickness.
The mainstream is just lazy, they rather sell you a power bank instead of making their phones last longer.
