TheHater, 31 Jul 2017Why get 3x Optical Zoom when it's just on a fixed range? I... moreSamsung came up with a 10x OPTICAL zoom smartphone ages ago, and it had OIS (Something Sony should consider using). I'm not saying Sony's not coming up with new things, but put aside the slo-mo thing, nothing is happening there. It shouldn't be really hard to admit that Samsung is bringing new technology. And unlike people like us that are willing to try or even buy the device, I'm sure you're just hating the new Note because you don't like Samsung.

I'll wait for smartphones to get 10x Optical Zoom at least, or should I say I'll wait for Sony to bring it and blow the competition away again like how they did the 960fps Slow Motion.

River rafter, 31 Jul 2017I am sure the note series is dead. What the original note s... moreIs that why Sony and the others are making losses? Cos they care for their customers and not wanna make profit? You don't make profits, you won't have money to do R&D and if people buy it, you'll try to maximize profits by giving just enough in the future once you establish your brand but keeping the quality. It's just common sense you don't change a winning formula.
Pretty sure you don't care about any companies either.

Stan, 31 Jul 2017Don't know about others, but the way i see it is that it's ... moreDon't get me wrong, I'm all for optical zoom and I was really waiting for it but I would prefer a larger sensor (around 1 inch like the Nokia 808, Panasonic CM1, and Lumia 1020). However, I just don't like how they're advertising it, as if it never existed before, especially Apple.
That's all that's bothering me.
By the way, Pixel uses a 1/2.3", which Sony has been using for a while, and also the Samsung S4 zoom and K Zoom used. I know it's a different sensor though. The one in the pixel is excellent as it stacks images.

AnonD-425519, 31 Jul 2017It's funny how Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi advertise these optic... moreDon't know about others, but the way i see it is that it's first time ever in a high end device. For Apple it was iPhone7, for Samsung it will be Note 8, and a few others will come around eventually.
Just like you, I love my camera. In my case it's a Sony A65 DSLT, but as any photographer would tell you, the best camera is the one that you have on you. And in 99% of cases that is a smartphone, even for those who own purpose build photo equipment.
I was waiting for a long time for sensor manufacturers to start making larger phone sensors. Not counting a few select and very old Nokia phones, the largest phone sensor on the market today is 1/2.55", used by HTC U11, HTC 10 and Google Pixel XL. Incidentally, these are also the ones with the best image quality. I just hope that these new ISOCELL modules are just as large as Sony's IMX378 module used by Pixel XL. On a 75mm module i'm willing to sacrifice 1.5 stops (down to f2.8 from f1.7) in order to gain an ability of a lossless zoom.

Anonymous, 31 Jul 2017I think it's quite obvious that was a combination. I don't ... moreI just translated the korean text where 1 says digital and 1 optical and it should be lossless, else it wouldn't be call optical zoom. Why we see it so pixelated is likely cos after zooming, they enlarge the 2 photos to compare the quality.

I am sure the note series is dead. What the original note series was at least. This is just a marketing gimmick. Samsung's new strategy is indeed saddening to many. It has evolved into a company like apple. Overhype around inferior tech and having us to pay a premium for it. Samsung unfortunately has become profit oriented and their phones will continue to become more expensive and featuring gimmicky tech that's cheap and useless.
