Google Play Services were burning up my battery - so I've disabled it. Battery problem solved and the phone is *much* snappier. Ok, some apps like Gmail, Maps etc won't run, but I can live with that

Google forces all Android phones to have it installed so Google Play can work. It was obvious they would reach this number although it's something people did not have a choice to do.

But almost everytime anyone flashes a new Rom to a device,that counts as as a new install of play services,so for my HTC hd2's,that's at least 527 supposed installs of play services..
