And, NO ONE COMPLAIN about that...
BUT, in MediaTek & Xiaomi case, ALL complain & say "no kernel sources, no buy" nonsense.
That's why, I think there must be something wrong in those "claimers" brain...
The point is, as long as company like Xiaomi, who fegularly release security & patch update, as well newer MIUI version, despite no OS upgrade, no problem.
BTW, SoC makers who release their kernel source are mostly shut down before 2015

-) Texas Instrument shut down
-) ST-Electronics shut down
-) Intel gave up making x86-based SoC
I myself is happier that Xiaomi will equip their in-house SoC which houses 4 core Cortex A73 + 4core Cortex A53 coupled with Mali G71 MP12 (12core! it will have better performance in gaming than last year beast Kirin 960 with 8core Mali G71).
HiSilicon is also first timer in designing SoC with powerful cores (Kirin 920 from 2014 with 4core Cortex A15 is HiSilicon's first try, and it is quite a beast, as well as Kirin 950 in 2015 with 4core Cortex A72, BUT before Kirin 960, HiSilicon did't get much attention, as they ALWAYS paired the powerful CPU with mediocre GPU, such as Mali T628 MP4 & T880 MP4, similar to MediaTek who ALWAYS coupled powerful CPU with low-performance 1core, 2core or 4core Mali GPU.
With they way Xiaomi is now (big enough to head-hunt good talent in designing SoC from other companies), I believed Surge X1/S2/whatever with 4core Cortex A73 coupled with Mali G71MP12 will be a threat to Kirin 960, Exynos 8890, and SD835, let alone SD660.

This phone has my money all up to the Surge S2.
Xiaomi is trying to hard to avoid the SD660.
The grandfather of SD660 aka SD650 has made Xiaomi Redmi 3 and Xiaomi a big HIT!

I really don't understand why some people are complaining about the CPU . Yes , it is made on a new platform , new brand etc. of Xiaomi so it won't have anytime soon custom ROMs & mods available , here the situation may be even worse than the Mediatek's one . But I don't get it what is wrong with the performance of this , 4x cortex A73 should be really fast . I'm still using a phone ( Xiaomi mi 4c ) with only two A57 fast cores and it runs great in browsing,social media . Now talking about the gpu , ok it is just so much faster the adreno 512 from Sd660 . It should be even better than the 530 and may be close to the flagship 540 ! 12 G-71 cores running at 830 MHz are developing a theoretical power of 340 Gflops making it just as fast as the S8's 20 cores configuration but clocked at just 567 MHz . This is insane for the price and displaying only 1080p ! And the UFS2.1 storage paired with 6GB of RAM would make it faster than S7/S8 since MIUI is much more polished than TouchWiz .

2cms of bezel is still too much, but not bad for a Chinese company, they all seem to having issues at reducing them, even in on premium models.
Good phone overall, but the CPU sounds too weak...

EMMC 2.1 looks like a mistake, it shows UFS2.1 even in the source website.

it is the same with surge for the price i dnt think xiaomi should be asked for more .
more importantly im hating on my 5" small phone and dying for abigger one with good value .

Just a reminder to xiaomi. Midrange phone doesn't sell well if it doesn't have 3.5mm headphone jack. People in general buy Midrange to save money but without the jack they would need to spend more money to be able to use the headphones which will add up to the total cost, got it ?

However, I think it's a typo. The 2.1 vrrsion is extremely old. It maybe UFS 2.1.

Anything with small cores only has no place in the Mi line. Xiaomi has to stop releasing 20 phones per year and focus in the camera department and make a clean separation between the Mi and Redmi series.

Some bash the mediatek but now surge is all okay. Don't get me wrong I would love for the surge to be a great chip but I don't really think is the go-to chip for the Mi series which is xiaomi flagship series.

There is different points to talk about, but to make it brief, just 2 points: first, oh it won't include the SD660 (sadly), but at least let's hope that the Surge S2 will perform quite similar (at least). And second, hopefully it will include an SD slot, and definitely not like the Mi6 (in this case).
