The Android O countdown site is showing the eclipse countdown for Corvallis, OR, United States. Got it? State code OR is for Oregon. OR is also the first 2 letters of Oreo. Thats why google choose that place.

This would be going against the desert names but is seems possible.
Also the boot animation images are named OC_Boot_XX_XXX.
That also could stand for Oatmeal Cookie Though

Android Oreo is really not likely. Anything Lockheimer teases (he teased Android 'Oreo') does not become the final name although Google just might break the trend. It's likely Android 8.0 is Android 'Orange Marmalade' because the countdown page looks so Orange. Android 'Oatmeal Cookie' also seems likely but really, not many people are fond of eating those coarse, dry, gritty, oatmeal cookies. Orange marmalade on toasted bread with peanut butter sounds and tastes so much better. Orange pie or orange cake would be boring.

It is meant to be released out of the box for most of first half of 2018 flagship. It gives time for manufacturer to integrate it with their custom android skin.
