But sony with the XZ1 which also has the same exact battery size as the compact version didn't do as good. If the xz1 had a 3000mah or higher it would be better

Big battery is good but the software is also is even more important ... look at with Sony XZ1 Compact,with it's 2700mAh breaks records.

Keeping up is not equal to, 960 gpu is so weak you can compare with as 810 or worse, same will be with 970 gpu, it will not be better than 835 or exynos 8895, so newest from all, but weakest, CPU will be same as both chipsets, so Kirin will be washed out by new exynos and Snapdragon in less than 4 months :) Kirin chipsets never been best or most efficient it was just in a middle and it will not change with 970

Thank you Huawei, for not decreasing the cap... moreWi the Mi Mix 2 there is some actual other parts cause of the smaller battery than cheapness of the company. The screen is significantly smaller, making the body significantly smaller, giving less space for the battery. Of course, they could have kept the same thickness as the original Mi Mix, giving maybe 100 or 200mAh extra, but to cram a full 4400mAh battery in is impossible, unless you make it significantly thicker, which some would like, but many others not.
When you look at the Mi Max 2, it kept the same dimensions of the original Mi Max, but there they did manage to increase battery capacity.
With the Mi Mix 2, they at least managed to put in a bigger battery in a smaller and thinner body than Samsung managed with their Note 8.

P.S. - it's impossible, whatever you do. Even with a chipset that is terrible for battery...
Heck even my mate 9 can last 6 hours always on non stop playing pokemon go (possibly one of the most taxing apps that exist on mobile, with screen always on max brightness, GPS, mobile data and camera on for augmented reality). I've tested ALL the AAA titles available for Android, and there is none until now, that depleted battery faster then pokemon go...

Kirin 970 will be competing with next years Snapdragon 850, because 835 is a joke for Kirin for sure. Can't wait for the reviews on the Mate 10

Loooool, what is wrong with Chinese brands and batteries capacities, 4000mah, they probably never heard about power management or battery optimization, check out the new Sony xperia xa1 plus with 5.5 inches FHD display and only 3400mah battery 102 hours endurance rating.

4000 mAh? Yay! Thank you Huawei, for not decreasing the capacity of the Mate series. If you can't increase it atleast don't decrease it by a lot, like Xiaomi, who cut down the capacity the battery capacity of the Mi Mix 2 by a whopping 1000 mAh.
Hopefully, they will also keep the 3.5 mm headphone jack safe too.

For example: to keep save the space, so the phone can be thinner or can somehow added another features/components like dual camera or put to put depth sensor for facial recognition. Other reason to save some production cost but still charged normal price to consumer, means bigger profit. Other reason is the manufacturer itself doesn't want consumers get significant battery life but only quite noticeable or decent improvement to keep the battery durability in check (bigger or keeping battery size will result less charging frequencies because efficient thus extending battery durability), so consumers still bring their battery phone replaced within less than 5 years.
