Anonymous, 18 Oct 2017Just like hdr+ hasn't improved images. ::eyeroll::HDR+ is trickery in the firmware, again, not necessary to use an image processor for that. The image processor is disabled currently remember, so the SD soc is doing the processing. So...eyeroll to you yes. Firmware does/can do a lot to manipulate the images.... noise reduction, sharpening, distortion correction, white balance correction, HDR effects, light falloff correction etc. Let's see the RAW output of the sensor....I'll only be impressed once that can look the same as the HDR+ manipulated images.

Anonymous, 18 Oct 2017No they didn't.Yes, they have. The 808 is MUCH faster at taking those 41MP images and downsampling them whem compared to the 1020, which is a much faster device in every other aspect; this is due to the discrete image processor in the 808.

Oh, interesting. The sooner the better then. & also well done to Google then.

Anonymous, 17 Oct 2017So they can advertise it on the pixel 3, duh! Then why are they activating with 8.1

I don't think this is something to rave about really. The image processor is separate from the camera sensor. The image processor takes the signal received from the camera sensor, then uses firmware to generate the jpegs and other file formats. Nothing that the main soc can't do. It won't improve image quality, that is the task of the camera sensor and the lens. Noise reduction is controlled by the firmware. The user experience might be better with a shorter time between shots, but thats about it.

IMHO, It might be the case with regards to the Pixel's DXOMARK, however the unit that was tested was a not a retail unit. It may or may not be activated (SoC mention in the article.) prior to the testing as once again the unit that undergone those test is not a retail unit. If these said SoC will be activated, it will not only enhance Image Processing, it will also enhance battery life. Looking forward to this.
