Bill, 21 Jun 2011Regarding somewhat long app load times: Yes, that is true o... moreI have had this phone for 2 years i think now, i use it daily for work, 6h/day - 5days/week, so i know clearly how to use it and its lackings. I was hanging around n900 community a lot at the beginning, but since i got my SGS1 1 year ago, (no need even to talk about dual core that i just bought 2 weeks ago), n900 got completely smoked out.
I was commenting on that last year to give my impressions frankly to ppl asking on gsmarena, got bashed by the fans :) And in that time GS1 was only half fast compared as it is now in his "Gingerbread versions" (i don't even feel the need to tune it or install custom roms).
Just try something else to get a more objective opinion, i was thinking same until i bought something else "for testing". I think with such powerful phones we install way more resident apps/utils due to phone's handling capacity. And still, boot time may be 10sec or so, logo included until you can already move into menus smoothly without any background loading. I talk about my GS's phones, but i have tried other good phones like Xperia X10 or Desire HD of my friends, you get similar results, hands down.
I'm not even talking about my work colleagues, we all got this same phone, nowadays i can't find any satisfied with it anymore among the closest to me.
Just an example, on my GS1, an install barely lasts more than 4-5 sec, and it has to be complex for that length, only a GPS app or a big (3D) game will last more and won't exceed 20/30sec. Try that on an overclocked n900, max optimized if you prefer.
Time has passed, just like computers, what was good before, doesn't hold comparison with present. Example, can't compare a Pentium 4 @ 3.4ghz with a Core i7 2600 @ 3.4ghz even with all additional cores disabled (or even a Core 2 Duo E8600 or so of 2 years ago).
Cheers.
Btw, i think even if Maemo looks great, Nokia is coming late with it if it doesn't pack something really appealing when we are all talking about dual core, even quad core for end of the year and 16/20MP camera.
PS: to the guy talking about Nokia's engineering, N8 wasn't the first 12MP phone out, Pixon 12 and Idou came before it, and pixon 12 was flat, a bit thick compared to nowadays standard but still not star trek looking like.

Anonymous, 20 Jun 2011Lol, wise post, but i can't agree you. I have n900 and SGS1... moreRegarding somewhat long app load times: Yes, that is true of some apps I've noticed also. But, not all of them.
Boot times? I don't have a problem with it given what I know is going on in the background. I find it quite comparable to the boot time of Symbian devices.
App installation painful? Yes, indeed, especially if one uses the default App Manager. However, the Maemo community as come out with a fast version, which takes care of that problem.
I don't how long you've had your N900, or how much Performance Tuning you've done on it. However, a lot of progress has been made in that area, that keep this 2 year old quite competitive with other more modern single core smartphones. Of course, the latest dual core smartphones are going to smoke it!
I'm not saying that the N900 is the end-all and be-all of smartphones. I'm just saying it has aged very well. ;)

AnonD-11462, 21 Jun 2011Am I the only one who finds this phone to be a rectangular ... morerofl, no but as usual Nokia fans are climaxing until announcement/final review then they will eventually step down just like they did with N8.
Reading posts looks like some messiah killer phone is going to be released. Like the dude talking about web creating / cd ripping, wtf on a phone in the street ? :) I don't pray android but i mean any modern phone OS can do that providing the apps and the market's demand. Even SS Bada i'm sure ! :)

Nokia has always had great design and this is brilliant
And the materials will be amazing this is not Nokia problem
I have stayed away from Nokia for years because their operating system is
terrible I truly hope it's not the same here. As I would like to try it, if not
I will be trying their windows phone.
