Why is this surprising? Glass phones, with even less bezel. It's expected.

Buy a case, insure it, or be very careful with the phone. That's it.

if it were HTC phones the crucifixion by people would be out of this world.

One that will hide all those bazel less crapp and thin body. So, welcome to the tank era. Where people look for slim bandy smartphones to have a reason to buy a tank cover just to keep them safe from shattering cause of the friction with the wind. Idiocracy is today. It was here since apple released it's first phone (that was not a smartphone!!) funny, the year before the the release of the first crapp ever in the world, the movie with the same name (Idiocrqcy) was released, quite a good one too.

So yeah, you can build "bezelless" phone with some degree of drop protection.
iPhone just prioritized the cosmetic aspect higher than durability in design.

Vegetaholic, 06 Nov 2017It comes at wireless charging cost, which is really useful ... moreWireless charging is a gimmick.
                                        Why?
Firstly, many places, especially outside the Major USA cities don't have them.
Secondly, if you need a quick charge and a venue has it, can you really leave your phone alone and hope it doesn't get stolen? Otherwise, you're stuck guarding it like a celebrity.
Thirdly, it doesn't do anything inheritely better than a charging cable.
And lastly, it actually is worse, since you still need a cable to plug the charging pad, the charging rate is much slower, and you cannot charge and talk/use the phone at the same time.

Most people would rather have a phone with a Metal unibody, a boxier design, and some bezels (80% StB). It makes a phone less slippery, lighter, more shock endurant, and easier to repair. Especially if your device is some glass sandwiched, curved device, with a useless aspect ratio and almost zero bezels to stop accidental touches and pressure points.
