Nokia camera guru D. Dinning reveals the N9 camera secrets

27 June, 2011
The 8 megapixel snapper at the back of the Nokia N9 might not be as much of a selling point as the 12 megapixel monster that the N8 packed, but that doesn't mean that its development took less effort. If you doubted...

Okay, here is the thing.. I have calculated this from Damian Dinnings reply in the source link above.. He says that the pixel size is 1.4 micro meter as opposed to 1.75 micrometer of N8..
        Here is the calculation:

        N8: Pixels - 4000 X 3000
        So sensor area = 4000 X 1.75 micro X 3000 X 1.75 micro
        = 36.75 mm^2
From wikipedia you can see that this is just a bit less than 1/1.8".. So that is 1/1.83" as we know it..

        Now, N9: Pixels - 3552 X 2448 (Full sensor size)
        So sensor area = 3552 X 1.4 micro X 2448 X 1.4 micro
        = 17 mm^2
From wikipedia, you can see that this is just less than 1/3".. So may be 1/3.02"

        There you have it folks..

So the sensor is actually quite smaller than N8's.. But the advanced technology and f number of 2.2 should give it a nice boost.. But shouldn't be enough to beat N8 though..

as friend of mine told me a while ago (he is dealing with high end SLR and DSLR): the megapixels are not the most important thing in the camera!

"12-megapixels in a module that size wasn’t going to be possible unless we’d been prepared to compromise the low light performance. We had a lot of internal debate around that point! On one side there are still a lot of people who believe megapixels is a measure of camera performance, while a growing number of others know it can result in compromise. We had the same challenge with the Nokia N8, should we go for 12-megapixels like others with smaller pixels and a smaller module or do what we felt was right? It’s always been our intent to provide cameras with a focus on real world performance. But on the flip side we need to consider what’s believed to be competitive in the market. We don’t believe in adding pixels just for the sake of it, if it doesn’t provide any genuine benefit."

This my friends is one of the things I love about Nokia. They actually try to take the high road and provide the best possible device, not just one with biggest marketable numbers.

Nokia really puts effort in their cameras. Sadly it seems most of the competition just tries to one up the megapixels.

GSMArena says: "A load of Nokia N9 camera and video samples surface, put the n8 to shame."

When it should have been: "A load of Nokia N9 camera and video samples surface, put iPhone, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, etc to shame."

We all know that the N8 is as good as the N9. In fact the Nokia has always had the best camera/video phones.

Too bad for N8 users, but i sthe way technology wants, N8 is yesterday news, same is gong to be to iPhone 4, SG2 and Optimus, there will be new hardware and neo OS (in some cases)...besides Nokia realize they can be on the same technology wagon forever, they are jumping on something more new and innovative.

Cool, I need to see this for eat my own words...

N9 seems to be that Nokia needs for alternative OS to WP7, looks like Nokia is on road again...Also Looks N9 is a well build phone, I hope WP7 phones will be the same quaility (or better is best).

Nokia is taking off and giving Power Toys for ll, is not any more just a phone, they are developing Power Phones, but not based on "brutal force" are based in engineering and dedication...

                        Cheers Nokia!!!!
