Samsung quietly drops its latest counter-suit against Apple

04 July, 2011
Samsung has dropped its latest suit against Apple in the United States. This is not a retreat, nor is Apple winning the case. According to Samsung it just needs to "streamline the legal proceedings"...

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2011samsung made copy-paste from the iphone4 design to their AL... moreAnd the LG Optimus 2x line doesn't look like an Iphone?

They all look alike :P

If the case turns out in Apple's favor, next up in line is Microsoft, sueing Apple for the copy/paste of their icons on Windows Desktop - it is also a similar way to work: click the icon, open the program in Windows, click the icon open the app on the Iphone.

IOW, if there is a decisive outcome in this case, all bets are off as to what is still 'original design'.

You'd be completely misguided if you are to think Samsung phones (or a specific phone in Samsung's product line) is going to be banned from a single country's marketplace. Not only would this be completely disproportional, the simple facts also speak against it. Conversely, no Apple Iphone version would be banned from a market either.

The worst thing that can happen here for either one of the companies is that they have to adapt the product so that it no longer breaks patent laws.

All in all, nothing to be really worried about no matter what fanboy you are. Don't let your fantasies get the best of you :)

Ah poor Samsung, if copying the iPhones aint good enough for them them then its filing on lawsuits against Apple. If Samsung werent so desperate to take a short cut route to the top end by replicating the great iPhone with their cheaper, yet still well marketed, products, then im sure none of this would be coming to light.

I see people commenting on the plasticky Galaxy but think of paying a 50% premium for metal? why wont i rather chose superior hardware and Android !! i am fine with my S... I love it actually... I can afford an Iphone... i own an Ipad and love it but i dont think i would pay more than the Ipad for the Iphone4...not worth it!! my logical mind thinks its a luxory...and i want my phone coz its my necessity.. So the case rests for me... i love the Ipad...i cant live without my IPOD but when it comes to phones...Its GALAXY S !!

All is about Google and Appel 'cause of android phones share getting bigger and bigger against the Iphone.

So, Appel have enough patent to sues Google with the key players here are HTC, Motorola and Samsung, which was filed by Appel too. Here comes the patents battle but Google doesn't have enough patent to fight against appel.

Actually, Google is planning to buy some pattents. From which company? Probably Motorola which have a lot as the first maker of mobile phone. Palm reported having over 1,650 patents and Motorola 23,019 patents in their most recent annual reports. Apple and HTC don't note their patent counts in their annual reports, but it was separately reported that Apple has 3,000, Google 316 and HTC a measly 58. One key difference between them is that Palm, Motorola and Apple have arguably had revolutionary impacts in the cell phone/PDA/smartphone industry (at various points in the last 20 years) and Samsung, HTC, SE, LG not so much. less revolutionary innovations (when compared with Motorola, Palm and Apple), it seems reasonable to speculate that Samsung, HTC, SE, LG had the least defensible patent portfolio.

Rumor says that Google could even buy Moto or Moto to become part of Google.

So, if Samsung lose they may not sell phones in USA as Appel wish.

They've dropped it in the sense that of the 2 lawsuits they had against Apple they've combined the second one with the claims of the first one so that they aren't paying for two different cases. Hope that explains it gsmarena!

Well. It does not mean Apple will be winning anyway. I'm sure one day Apple will run out of ideas to innovate themselves. Steve should not be happy too early. The war is yet to occur. Even if Samsung is barred from selling the products in US, I'm sure some people will get it through other means.
