A 24MP selfie camera is apparently in tow as well.

With raw and manual mode you will still get worse results than Pixel's HDR+ jpgs. In order to rescue the highlights you will need to underexpose by several stops => noisy, unusable image . You can bracket raw files, but then this is not very good for moving objects whereas HDR+ has no issues with moving objects.

Be Nice To Others, 06 Dec 2017Wide angle is still the best thing for a smartphone. How m... moreDigital zoom is never as good as optical zoom unless one uses multi frame technology.
Ultra wide angle is awful in my opinion and in most cases this is for people who know nothing about photography and are too lazy for the composition, not for people who really know how to use an ultra wide angle camera (for instance astrophotography). LG's lens has huge distortion (even the G6) and is bad for animals, portraits, macro, ... Even landscapes are unusable due to the distortion.
As a compromise you can take a panorama or stitch the images or in some scenarios just use your feet. With optical zoom no compromise exists. Digital zoom leads to worse noise and detail, even at 1.1x!
Have you never watched a movie? 50mm and tele lenses are extremely important for movies.
And actually 50mm is the "normal" field of view that photographers use.
So every smartphone camera is already a wide angle camera. What LG has is an ultra wide angle camera. But LG's main camera is less wide angle than most smartphone cameras (just 71°, many smartphone cameras have ≈80°), so other smartphone cameras don't need an ultra wide angle camera as much as LG!

"100% more light" Probably f/1.6 than f/2.2 , so not really better than Mate 10

has no one told Huawei the MegaPixel race was over long ago?

Wide angle is still the best thing for a smartphone.
How many times do you have to move backward just to get everyone into the image? As a result, image quality degrades. LG did the right thing here.
Heck, even Sony, a big camera manufacturer, also believes in the same idea and incorporates it on their XZ1 Compact.

Enjoy your so-called "Optical Zoom" that only goes up to 2x, knowing even digital zoom can sometimes do just as good. Monochrome? For what? At least if I could really see a major benefit of using it...I don't. I have tried the Mate 10 and trust me, its images using the two cameras would turn out similar as it is with just one (the color, of course).

I don't want a phone to make me the pictures ...I want a phone to take the pictures as real as they are...as I can see them with my own eyes.

This is really interesting. Currently, Huawei has the best camera setup in my opinion. Wide angle setups like LG's are also extremely fun, but I want better photos. Zoom setups are useless to me, as my phone have 2X hybrid zoom and it really comes close to other phones with zoom setups. I'm writing this comment from my P10+ right now. It's an excellent smartphone. The only thing that bugs me sometims is the software updates. They come monthly, and they do improve the performance and battery life, but they're always one month behind when it comes to security patches. Currently I'm in October security patch. It's not that big of a deal, but it bugs me sometimes.

I think that they'll add another monochrome sensor with 20MP of resolution. The P10+ can take 20MP shots right now. So, in theory, they can add another 20MP mono sensor and use it to make 40MP shots. I also hope that they also find a way to combine the monochrome sensor when shooting videos. Not that the current videos are bad or lacking (they're excellent), just to improve the quality. Even if the size gets bigger, Huawei phones use H.265 compression so I'm not gonna worry in that department. So it'll be 12MP RGB + two 20MP mono sensors. Let's hope for the best!

"I don't take pictures I make photos that are only good at social media"

                    There fixed it LOL.

Even with a 1/2.3" sensor, the pixels would not even be 0.6 micron.
                          Unless they downsample to 10MP

I wonder if the 40 MP claim is about using a similar solution to OPPO, where the phone had a 13 MP camera which took several shots of a scene and then combined and upscaled them to 50 MP. It's not nearly the same as having a 50 MP camera.

                                Still, this sounds neat.
