Mid-range phones don't use Mediateks, because their support for phone OEMs is not very good. The SoCs themselves are okay, if not great. Driver support is not very good, however.

Poor support is especially a problem for non-Chinese OEMs, because documentation is often poorly translated to English and arrives later than the original Mandarin Chinese docs. The shadow of "Taiwan English or Chinglis", a long-standing industry meme, has not disappeared yet. There is still shortage of people who can read technical Mandarin and translate it reliably to good English. Many Taiwanese companies are also cheapskates and do not want to pay for professional translators as much as their skills would warrant. They can always find some other translating job, so they don't have to work cheaply. Machine translations are still years of being able to translate technical documents reliably enough.

    Mediatek needs to partner with Google for Oreo Go edition. Snapdragon is already powerfull enough. Mediatek Soc are simply the worst, it's the slowest SOC in the planet right now.
    No flagship and no mid tier device sports a MediaTek SOC.
    85% of all mid tier devices are powered with snapdragons. Flagship high tier are mostly 60% snapdragon, 30% Exynos and 10% Kirin.
    Low tier devices that cost 100-200 bucks are powered by 70% mediatek and 30% snapdragon.
    Mediatek is losing ground, it only powers low end devices and the snapdragon 4xx is catching up in terms of pricing and performance.

    This could be a good OS for mediatek but if snapdragon get's the only support, Mediatek won't be able to recover and will start having losses.

          Will be fun to see devs bringing Oreo to nexus 4 and nexus 5, as well as to other phones, specially with treble which will make it easier to port and deploy.

            AnonD-274973, 07 Dec 2017it's coming to 2018 yet Android oems still dare to sell and... moreolder ram is dirt cheap, but not the newer ones. newer android needs newer socs as it'll utilize a new features that present on newer socs, and newer socs only support newer ram (lpddr4), which will get more and more pricey as nand shortage is happening until at least 2019

              We,your getting confused between sheer grunt number crunching ability and optimisation.
              Apple can optimise their chips cos they only have to work well on Apple's own kit.
              Android is hardly optimised at all and relies on sheer hardware grunt to make it work..
              Which came first,a badly optimised,clunky os that needed more and more grunt to work at all.
              Or
              More and more grunt that allowed a badly or un-optimised os to be written ?
              Me,I've been using android since before it even had a name or pre-beta release,it was rubbish then,it's still rubbish.
              Just like everything else in life,Google has decided one product for the elite wealthy that can afford over-speced devices and another sub-par product for everyone else.
              Gives you a glimpse of the mind set and attitudes and morals of those at the top of Google/alphabet..

              As its a choice between either Apple or Google and no third choice,I use Google, as I loathe Apple slightly more than I do Google.
              When a viable third choice is available I will be one of the first to use it.
              I still even use winmo 6.5 on some of my devices,it still works,and is probably more secure than android..
              If I had the wealth,I would pay good money to ms to buy winmo 6.5 and pay more money to developers to update and expand,and then release it totally free to everybody,no ties,no nothing,just to get up Google's noses and put a big dent in their plans for total dominance of the non Apple mobile world.

                AnonD-477937, 07 Dec 2017Google should force all manufacturers to have the latest ve... moreWish it was that simple... you're aware that you need to push the compiler built for the OS into something like 1.1 billion processors at ONCE. right? and add the skins features into the loader of EVERY F@CKING DEVICE out there!? I am not one to swear. I do wish Android was perfectly 100% with the latest Android version. but it's easily said. but hard to preform.

                  To all those who are complaining about why Android go is not in flagships and such. this OS (the lightweight one) is SPECIFICALLY BUILT for low end devices. it DOES NOT work with high end specs. and according to my sister who WORKS in google. (welp. the ads part. but still) the OS reads up to 1 GB of ram anyway. so having it on an S8 would result in a fatal error. or feeling like low end phone.

                          Does Android Oreo (Go Edition) comes to Mediatek? Surely Mediatek needs that since most of the "very" budget phone use its processor.

                                    it's coming to 2018 yet Android oems still dare to sell android phones with 1GB or less?! RAM is like dirt cheap nowadays, at least minimum come with 2 or 3GB RAM. No wonder Android is so fragmented and slow partly due to Google fault and these phones won't likely see any updates after release and left with security concerns.

I run vanilla Android, straight from Google, ever since Jelly Bean and every release there after. It doesn't feel more bloated and in fact speeds up with every release - not to mention it's more streamlined and things get done faster.

                                      A good example of this is some Androids (Google Pixel 2, Samsung Note 8, One Plus 5T, etc) beating the iPhone X and iPhone 8 in speed tests despite their SOCs being 40% less powerful. That wouldn't have been possible if Android as a whole was bloated.

                                      I love the speed on my $200 Xiaomi Mi5 and have no desire to upgrade whatsoever and it's been almost two years. Android Go strips a bit too much from Android for high end phones IMO
