Google will require that apps support Oreo features in 2018, 64-bit chipsets in 2019

20 December 2017
The apps can still run on older hardware and software, but will have to follow the rules on new phones.

I may have a pc but that doesn't mean my friends want to spend a grand or more plus ongoing hardware costs to keep up and play with me. And as already pointed out there are exclusives on consoles that aren't on PC especially on ps4 as xbox has their cross platform with windows. Last of us, Horizon, God Of War, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, the list can go on

The games are t... moreI don't recall having Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us and many other AAA exclusives available on the PC. Plus, even when going the Xbox route, you just can't argue with pricing -- it's much less expensive, convenient even, to buy an Xbox One S at below USD$199 and just play games.

The games are the same and you can hook multiple controllers on a PC for multiplayer.. I have PC for gaming by myself and my friends and I have the wii for my family especially my kids.. Nothing beats Nintendo for fun across all ages..

Nintendo 64 was awesome. F-Zero X, among others, had some of the best game play ever. Shit I may have to find a used console now. Thanks GSM haha.

PC for hardcore games, Ps4/Xbox1 for fun with friends, DS for portable although phone is getting just as good. Wii/WiiU/Switch really serves bugger all purpose.

I agree, lets forgo graphics and processing power in favor of useless interactivity.

Touch screen on the DS is NOT a gimmick.. There are a lot of fun games that makes use of just the touchscreen and no buttons on the DS.. Titles like Picross 3D and Kirby to name just a few.. Clearly you have not had a chance to play the DS.. Touch screen also proved essential for FPS games and suddenly you find it replicated on the DualShock 4.. DS as well as the Wii was a smashing success.. Wii is still fun to this day whereas xbox 360 and ps3 are sitting in the dust now.. It's motion controller inspired PS move and Xbox Kinect but they never replicate the fun factor of Wiimote.. You have a controller that act as a normal controller, sword, steering wheel, light gun, punch glove, and many more.. How genius is that? The move to Wii U is unpolished idea.. That's why they polished it and came up with the Switch.. The switch is basically the wii u tablet gamepad but with removable left and right controller.. The controller also support motion and infrared among other things.. Playstation and Xbox only survived due to their exclusive titles from PC.. But now the number of exclusive titles dwindles and more and more are available on the PC with better graphics.. Only Nintendo provides genuine console gaming fun

Haha, good luck with that. Waiting for the backlash from developers.
Developers want more people use their apps, and unless Google is blind, majority of Android users are still on Kitkat + Lollipop, with MM second. So they will code to the lowest common denominator, for obvious reason (why would you punish your users on older OS?). OEMs are still releasing NEW phones, even upcoming ones in 2018, with Nougat with no clear plan for update to Oreo.

So, good luck with that Google. You cannot punish developers when the OEMs are doing whatever they want.

Nintendo did loose the hang on home console building, but because they try to innovate and get the player to interact differently with games, while PS/XBOX are about PC gaming on the cheap without the confusion of picking the good compatible hardware.

The Nintendo 64 was quite advanced for its day, ... moreThere's potential for a much more powerful upgraded switch, if they wait for 7nm they can make it around four times as powerful in the same power constraints. That could take it close to PS4 power. Throw in a 1080p display and a larger battery and it'll be a really nice upgrade.

                                        Nice pic.
The Nintendo 64 was quite advanced for its day, it was the first to use a 64-bit processor for its graphics powerhouse. However, the limitations with memory was tricky and developers didn't like the cartridges which had very little storage space for models, maps, sounds, textures, commands, and cutscenes. Its why the PSOne... erm, won.

While Nintendo was stuffing up Home Consoles, it wasn't for Mobile Consoles. The original GameBoy was a powerhouse for its time. The Game Boy Color equally impressive. However, technology advanced quite a bit before the Gameboy Advance hit the shelves, but it was still a great kit without any major flaws.

Unlike, back in the Home Console where Nintendo let Sony take the market with the PS2. They had no answer until the GameCube which was a disaster because the hardware, whilst more powerful than the PS2, was quite cut-down compared to the options they had. And they went with a proprietary miniDVD to load games, which again, had developers uninterested due to storage limitations.

Next Sony copied the mistakes of Nintendo, by creating and adopting UMD's for the PSP. Although a clearly better system than the GBA, the very poor quality and dim screen detracted from the experience. And the UMDs made it a challenge to develop games for.

With this hiccup, Nintendo went all-in with their next era: gimmicks. The DS (Dual Screen) was an update for the GBA. Whilst the main screen was good quality and brightness, the second low-quality screen with touch was/is a gimmick. However, due to practically having a monopoly on the market, the product was a success. And the Wii was just a GameCube in a new body, with standard DVDs, and using motion tracking. It was a flop. However, Nintendo did sell a lot of units of it, mostly for the "mums" and "grandads". However, the system collected dust for most owners, unlike the more engaging Xbox 360 and PS3 systems.

The Wii U simply doubled-down on the mistakes of the Wii and DS. It flopped deservedly.

Now, we have the Nintendo Switch. Its a gimmicky Home Console. But it makes for one fine Mobile Console. I thus conclude, that Nintendo doesn't know how to make Home Consoles but are fine at crafting Mobile Consoles.
