Also those are meant to be consumed on mobile devices, if you want to watch them on your TV or monitor tough luck, buy one of those that get in portrait mode.
IMO it's hardly the cancer the tech sites often say they are. Portrait videos look excellent on my 10 inch tablet. Plenty of screen real estate, so the video is clearly visible and being able to see a lot more information on the vertical that is sometimes needed.
If anything I'd wish that this stupid "rule" that videos should be taken in landscape was abandoned so much so that even documentaries or even movie scenes are sometimes shot in the vertical, I often feel vertically challenged (in some scenes) on professional shots, as if I have blinders installed on top and below my eyes. I watch most of my content on my tablet these days (bigger fov than even 100 inch screens when held at 1 ft) so I would had made great use of it.

As for "most people watch YouTube on phones" - well you're right, I remember they said that most people watch a few hours of YouTube every day... But still if I'm watching something in HD and in company, I'll watch it on my monitor. Some people use their TVs as monitors too. Screens get wider, movies get wider, I really don't see an excuse for vertical videos unless there's just one person in them, talking. Even then, I would prefer to see the surroundings. Imagine if they started making vertical movies or vertical TV.

Most people watch youtube on their mobiles these days anyway, so it's a moot point.

Some countries like Taiwan already got it few months ago on iOS while some countries like Malaysia haven't. It was the same on Android back then. Different countries or users got it at different time.

.AGREE. apps should and must be smarter in videos and camera as many users aren't.
.CAMERA apps on ALL smartphones MUST display or remind the user to tilt the phone HORIZONTALLY before pressing that record button!
.Vertical videos is NEVER good, specially when watch your footage on your (MOST) TVs right?

[deleted post]Portait mode is better for scenes that have more information in the vertical. It is pretty silly to use landscape mode in selfie videos and/or when taking a video of tall structures.
Portrait videos actually revolutionized video taking , before them certain scenes were impossible to be recorded well...
Once again the masses are proved wiser than the technical "know-it-alls".

You serious? Vertical videos are much better for certain types of videos like selfie videos or similar.
Also android does this for years, didn't even know that iOS started doing this lately.
