Their progress goes like this:
In a specific year, when a smartphone gets 13mp, a DSLR gets 50mp.
The next year (or generation), when a smartphone gets 50mp, a DSLR gets 250mp.
Not implying those literally, just merely stating how everything works.
In short, DSLRs progress as much as smartphone cameras do.

I will give my money to the first manufacturer who make a phone with a decent CPU, close to stock Android, without a fingerprint or face scanner, with a good 18:9 display, decent camera, decent sound, is smaller than 148 mm, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
Is that much to ask?

There's zero common sense in removing a feature they themselves make money off. It's not like bluetooth headphones won't sell to people who currently like and use them.
It's almost like some evil people behind the scenes are ordering them to do things like that just for the purpose of screwing us and they have to obey...

We can not buy a decent speced device in phone-size!!!
HOPEFULLY this ridiculous trend will see an end when we get foldable devices, so we can get back to phone-sizes when folded (=less than 65mm wide), and have phablet/tablet sizes unfolded. The OPTIMAL would be a device with a three-part display, folded to say 65x115 and unfolded about 205x115. And with some software that ignored edges-area touches.
And perhaps a compact version for those with small hands/handbags/pockets about 55x98 respectively 175x98.
Even the compact one would be quite big unfolded, 35% larger area than even the Xiaomi Mi Max 3... (The full would be 86% larger)

Fi... moreI totally agree with you on the mini jack thing. I was quite unpleasantly surprised when Mi 6 arrived without one and later when even larger Note 3 left it out I had written Xiaomi off completely as my next upgrade. A shame really as I was really interested in the brand and was considering them for my next phone. Moreover, Xiaomi is offering a good lineup of really nice 3.5mm earphones of which I own quite a few, so I really wasn't expecting them shooting themselves in a leg like that.
I mean I can live without IP68 ingress protection as I don't have a habit of bathing with my phone on me, but an absence of an earphone jack is an instant turn off

Biggest sensor now is imx300. Used inside Z5 and now XA1 series. 7,87mm diagonal.
Sensors inside cameras have more than 30mm.
Any photo from any phone looks good on a 5.5" screen.
See it on a 42" tv... You will change your mind.

Overall, these are very negative trends.
I would like to see:
Some phones with plastic construction (for lighter weight)
Removable or at least user replaceable, large batteries (>4,000 mAh)
Slim but existent bezels (for protection, to avoid ghost touches and to allow front-facing speakers)
Front and back fingerprint scanners (because under glass scanners will probably be less secure)
SD card and dedicated dual SIM sockets (dual 4G Volte, which unfortunately will likely be confined to 845 and Kirin 970, and maybe a new Exynos)
Larger camera sensors (and thicker phones to avoid camera hump), dual pixel focus, and with OIS and EIS for stills and every class of video that the image processor can support. GSMarena does not even track sensor size!
Dual back cameras with one as wide angle
More phones with vanilla Android, unlocked bootloaders, successful implementation of Project Treble (ability to compile future Android versions without vendor support), driver support from Qualcomm and other closed-source vendors to patch kernel vulnerabilities in their drivers
3.5mm jack
Universal adoption of USB type-C and standards compliant fast chargers
Screens without a horrible blue shift (too high colour temperature)
A choice between 16:9 and 18:9 or wider aspect ratios. GSMarena, please allow searching on aspect ratio.
A choice of screen sizes (4.5,5.0,5.5,and larger)
Actual adoption of the latest SoCs in a timely manner, and with appropriate performance versus value (big cores in the mid-range, not endless Snapdragon 625 — or in lower mid at least use 636. 4xx and 2xx in low and bottom end only)
Lower prices, to reverse this year's trend

Even S5 was more than 700 ,00 ... Ugly, cheap plastic, oversaturated screen. Bad battery life

2017 was a really boring year for smartphone industry.
Firstly, the stupid 2:1 screen ratio. When most of the video content on the internet is 16:9, switching to a new ratio is simply a waste of space. You can read a bit more text though, but the trade off is not worth it.
Then we have everyone using glass backs. Why? Glass is boring, fragile, a fingerprint magnet and not a premium material at all. I know it's easy to manufacture and pretty cheap, but so is plastic. Since we have to use a case for protection why don't we agree on a cheaper solution and reduce the flagships already ridiculous price?
Oh, and can't forget about the lack of the headphone jack. HTC almost perfected it with the 10, only to ditch it in the next models. Google laughing at Apple for removing it last year decided to remove it from Pixel 2. Even Xiaomi dropped it. I'm like, wtf? Has everyone thrown out their good old headphones with the good old jack? Really?
And honestly, I don't have high hopes for 2018. Since stupid trends were boldly accepted by the majority in 2017, more stupid trends will come and also be accepted.
People will buy everything as long as it's new and shiny.

The trend I dislike the most is phones getting unreasonably large. 5.5+ inches is no longer a phone in my eyes. It's a phablet.
When I was looking for a new ~5 inch screen phone at the end of last year, I had relatively small range of choice. If I were to look for a new phone now, I have no doubt I would have even less to choose from in 5 - 5.2 inch range.
Nowadays companies have the audacity to call 5.5 inch devices "compact". I don't see anything compact in a device I can't comfortably control with one hand and have difficulty stuffing down in my pocket.

I'm saddened by the fact that phones are getting bigger every year. Just like cars. The original Honda Civic was about the size of a Smart car - back in the early 70's. Now it's as big or bigger than a 70's Honda Accord, for example. I like phones that are under 70 mm in width. Hope we haven't seen the end of this size. Fortunately Samsung and LG as well as Essential released phones in 2017 that were 70 mm or under in width. I used to like the Xiaomi Redmi series but now their Redmi 5 is quite a bit over 70 mm wide, not for me.
