The problem is not that the high end phones can't hit 60 fps in asphalt 8, but that the game itself is capped at 30 fps. Even a quad core cpu paired with a low end mali gpu can hit 30 fps on that game on maximum graphical settings. If Razer has somehow managed to convince gameloft to change how asphalt 8 works then good for they.

Samsung for example made a curved screen and despite its tottaly useless to have a curved screen looks bad its resistant to screen protector you can have a screen protector along with a case and people still using it.

I don't think that many games will take advantage of the screens high refresh rate and it won't matter to most people anyway.

People should stop talking about this abomination and forget as soon as possible, what a failure. Like having 120hz screen with generic mobile chipset will help to play amazing games, Lol, yeah probably will help you to play candy crush or angry birds, well tell for editor. If you going to play serious graphically games it is zero chance to run it at 120 frames. Razor should focus instead of putting proprietary beastly Tegra chipset with oled screen and exclusive games, instead they gave you some garbage 120hz option which hardware not capable of sustaining. Enough said

So much fuss for a "Gaming" phone, whose TV out capabilities are yet unknown... LOL.

Anyhow, games can be optimised for 120 fps display, in more ways than one.
The game environment can be cleared with less & lighter textures, and lesser polygons & objects, to increase fps, plus the game itself can be tuned to remove anti aliasing, fog effects, etc. to make sure it touches 120 fps, or around it.
Or it could just mean enhancements to fix the framerate @ 60 fps, for Vsync-like effect...

Or the game could itself run at 60 fps, and the other effects like smoke, dust, etc. could be shown in 120 fps, and the game's frames could be duplicated...

And lastly, like Mr. iPrasad says, they may go for lower native resolution like Full HD and stretch it.

Although, I do believe Razer should've opted for FullHD display with 120 fps. Achieving the same on 2560X1440 pixels (2.5 times more than Full HD) seems kinda tough...

@Prasad you don't need to hit 120FPS in order to take advantage of this 120Hz display ...

For one, any framerate below or above 60FPS would look much better on a static 120Hz display particularly with Android enforcing V-Sync everywhere since stutter from the mismatched framerate and refresh rate is vastly reduced.

Second of all, the display in question has Adaptive Sync - basically, any framerate a game runs at is displayed as-is, with the display refreshing as soon as a new frame is available - this would mean that all games, even those that tend to run below 60FPS, benefit - if a game goes above that, every frame above 60FPS benefits on a 120Hz display over a 60Hz (Adaptive Sync) display. No other Android phone even has Adaptive Sync.

Third of all, 120Hz displays still display < 60FPS content with less input latency, as the display scanout is now 1 / 120s rather than 1 / 60s. Essentially, there is no game that doesn't "benefit" from this display - it's just that some benefit more than others, while a game that runs poorly, at, say, 30FPS, will still benefit, albeit with a framerate that is too low for the experience to be enjoyable anyway.

And finally, hitting V-Sync on any display brings about considerable input latency - with mobile phones, touch latency is already pretty high, even among the best in that metric - latency reduction on mobile phones is pretty essential to any mobile gaming experience. A game hitting 60FPS @ 60Hz has considerably more input lag than the same game running 60FPS @ 120Hz in Adaptive Sync mode. The difference is noteworthy, and this is especially true with Android having no real framerate limiter that could avoid hitting V-Sync by limiting to 57FPS @ 60Hz.

I don't see why a certification program that promotes mobile phone games with higher, or more consistent framerates would be as unnecessary as you seem to be portraying.

Razer flop phone, phony 120hz gimmick.

Bit of a joke.. The only thing 120Hz is going to do is maybe VR for 60hz on each eye or something. But really, how many (Non-VR) games are running past 60FPS anyway? More Marketing Propaganda BS than anything else since they tend to make crap equipment and overinflate their prices (eg. selling dodgy Membrane KBs for same price as other's mechanical KBs).
