2. "People are "conditioned" to buy phones from a carrier" - That's not true at all, most consumer know they can buy outside their carrier. They typically don't because that means they may have to pay full retail price, have less support, the phones may not be compatible with their networks features or they can't use the carrier related options (Jump On Demand, etc)

3. "Plus, it would not surprise me one bit, if Apple/Samsung uses some sort of political pressure, to help keep others out of this market" - It's already been reported by the Wall Street Journal that AT&T dropped the Huawei deal because of political pressure from the FCC. It was reported the FCC was issues with Huawei because of spying, close relationship with the Chinese government and other issues.

This wasn't a commercial move at all from either AT&T or Huawei. 18 members of Congress wrote a joint letter to the FCC, asking the US government to stop Huawei from working directly with any US carrier, because Huawei is a Chinese company.

It's pretty obvious that this is neither a national security issue nor a business problem. Huawei was never clearly proven to be a threat, and there is clearly a huge demand for their phones in the US. The telecom manufacturer lobbies probably had a big part in this, because if Huawei were to compete with them in the US, they would no longer be able to sell their $1000+ phones nearly as easily...

Anonymous, 09 Jan 2018AT&T want to be exclusive seller of Huawei Mate 10 Pro.... moreYeah, just like they have been exclusive sellers of other phones, they did not market, advertise, or in any other way try to push. I remember when the Dell Streak 5 came out. I bought one direct from Dell because I wanted a BIGGER SCREEN (3.5" was the norm then). At the at&t store they NEVER HEARD OF IT, even though their website said they were the "exclusive dealer". Dell had it, unbranded, unlocked so I bought it from them. Even though it was on a very ancient version of android at the time (2010), it was a great phone.
Huawei probably figured out, that if they make it exclusive to at&t, at&t won't promote it, so no one will buy it. They should offer it to Best Buy, Target, Walmart, T-Mobile. Let the UN-carrier t-mobile sell it.

I know a lot of "non USA" people are questioning what the big deal about being "branded" to or associated with a carrier. You see, in the USA, we just got off of the "you gotta get your phone from a carrier, tied to a 2 year contract, so you can have it for 49.99 - 100.00 dollars". People have been under the impression, if you want a phone and be on at&t, Verizon, Sprint or whomever, you MUST buy it from a carrier.
Sadly, uninformed consumers in the USA (I call idiots), still think you have to buy a phone from a carrier. So, they walk into a carrier store...what do they see? MOSTLY Apple/Samsung phones. People are "conditioned" to buy phones from a carrier, so the carrier is going to push, in this case, Apple/Samsung because you KNOW the manufacturer probably gives them a deal on volume purchases. When the bulk of USA consumers buy their phone from a carrier, or branded store, it makes it more difficult to break into the USA market. Plus, it would not surprise me one bit, if Apple/Samsung uses some sort of political pressure, to help keep others out of this market. Why do you see so many phones released, that do not have the LTE frequencies of the USA market?
I've had 3 Huawei phones. All have been perfect, great battery life and performance.

A shame for the US, bought this phone a few weeks ago. It's really really good, especially if you're looking for a stellar battery life.

harwey, 09 Jan 2018It doesn't matter how good Mate 10 pro is,fact, but I don't... moreHuawei can sell mate pro for about $1000 all they need to do is put apple logo
You do have a point samsung and apple are more established brands huawei first need to dominate mid range segment than slowly move towards high end

What carriers do now is divide the phone's total price in 24 months (or whatever contract timeline you opted for). That's also not that much of an advantage, you still end up paying full price.
You could easily visit Huawei's US website and pay the phone with a credit card, then divide the payments in 12 or 24 months, then get the contract you want without any ties whatsoever.

It doesn't matter how good Mate 10 pro is,fact, but I don't believe U.S. buyers who spend $800+ on a new phone will go for Huawei. There's Apple&Samsung for those customers, maybe LG but in small numbers(V30)..Huawei should enter US market with Honor line,in a price range $300-500..buyers will get great phones and cheaper than Sams,Lg,Sony overpriced midrangers..

AT&T want to be exclusive seller of Huawei Mate 10 Pro. On the other hand Huawei want sell it through any US carrier (more than one) and also unlocked version.

I dont think huawei would be able to sell much in USA so its better to back off atleast for now

At&t is the only carrier in America? Poor Americans. Huawei really shouldn't give up that easy. And if Trump really is the problem, then remove the problem. Apple does it, Samsung does it.

Mate 10 Pro is a great phone and I think it is better to sell it without to be tied to any US carrier. Buy it without a plan and be free to choose your carrier or change it anytime you want. For a country that made "Freedom" as its mark I don't understand why Americans like to be slaves of carriers. It is a non sense at all. And for all that mocks Huawei as "chinese cheap phone maker", you guys need to know that Apple, Oneplus, ZTE, Oppo, Huawei, all of them make their phones in China. Wake up, guys! Read more, learn more!

I think this is good for end consumers, Huawei will have more margin to play with and that will help them bring the price to a even better point for end users. I predict they will list the phone on Amazon for $449 and quickly drop to $399 thereafter

Good; I don't think Huawei will do well there anyway. The company is all about cheap smart Chinese product that average american consumer won't be able to apperciate that much.

I bet no one cares in USA, they are very far from being leaders in innovation or something else :)
