Test: iPhone 8 and iPhone 7 performance after the Spectre and Meltdown patches

13 January 2018
Patching these security vulnerabilities slows down older processors, but more recent chips see little difference in speed.

My iPhone 7 plus Geekbench score was 13226.
    My AnTuTu score was 19426.

Almost scored more than iPhone 8 plus.

"We couldn't find a pre-update iPhone 6s, so we're not sure when a vital CPU upgrade occurred to make the Spectre and Meltdown patches a non-issue."

Nothing occurred, there is no performance hit on the iPhone 6 either. I get the same score before and after the patch on my old iPhone 6.

We did a test run with an iPhone SE, and benchmarks improved after the update.

Roy-86, 13 Jan 2018iPhone 7 is 2 generations old already! Would you care to... moreYou're right, 2 generations is a bit misleading. My point was that this isn't an issue that remains to be solved, but rather something that was solved a while ago.

FreezeGame, 13 Jan 2018Dumbphones posing as smartphones, functioning on a closed, ... moreMost people (95% people) never use the 'smart' features that some of us do.Proof is just how much craze was generated because of a background blur photo effect or as it's called portrait mode.It is essentially useless and could have been done even on a decade old phone with some software tricks. But look at the craze over it which will soon fade away but if you still don't get my point then in simple language:in the past Nokia succeeded because of its user friendliness and not because it had better features, similarly Apple is today's Nokia i.e it's user friendly for dumb people.

"Long story short thereÂ’s little change. The processor performance suffers a minimal loss in performance, too small to notice. RAM speed seems unaffected (both Spectre and Meltdown exploit the CPU cache, so slower RAM access is one of the possible issues when patched)."

This applies to iPhone 6 too and all other iPhones. there's lot of videos in YouTube showing that, yet one guy got big drop in scores is reported everywhere and it didn't had anything to do with Spectre update.

                                      Here is iPhone 6 https://youtu.be/s_qiACdkI3U
