04 February 2018
In this installment of our Sunday debate, and nicely timed with Apple Q1 results, we ask are phones getting too expensive.

[deleted post]That poor company that gives you money for you to enjoy on phones such as Samsung Note 4 and Note 8 only for you to end up trashing others because they can't afford it.
All kinds of garbage makes money these days sadly.
If you can afford it it doesn't give you the right to tell others they are not using their brains. Not everyone lives the privilege of rich little boy that is payed to spend all his day trash talking consumers on GSM arena.

It's getting expensive because of the enormous amount of waste that it generates, by implication damages to the environment to harvest teh resources and dispose of the older models.
Regardless of whether the manufacturers are consciously planning phone obsolescence, the increment improvements in the phones from one version to the next does not justify the need to replace a whole phone.
Better that manufacturers spend more effort in making the phones last longer. In the article, gsmarena show a StarTac phone and the price but forget to calculate the total life cost of the StarTac which can last for 10 years without breaking down. Where-else the ihpne barely make it past a third year before it dies.

Anonymous, 05 Feb 2018lmao its because people like you Apple charges looney price... moreDon't worry, in an open market, super-normal profits can never be sustained. That is why there are good-and-cheap phones.

Apple: well it is more of a fandom rather than a real market.

Paying over $500 for a phone is flushing money down the toilet. I'll get the S8 when S9 launches, sue me.

[deleted post]lmao its because people like you Apple charges looney prices. You think they will stop there? Soon $1500 will be flagship price, then $2000, then what? Will you then get a midranger? The ugly Samsung A8 is expensive for a midranger, and soon this will be the standard pricing scheme. Wake up and smelll the coffee

you cant really compare the 80s to 2018. Phones arent an experimental technology anymore, its mature and greed is only the reason why phones cost so much..I say boycot any phone over $600.

Flagship phones are getting more expensive.

However, "good enough" phones are getting cheaper. These "good enough" phones already have the necessary features found in most high-end to flagship phones.

That peter person doesn't know what he's talking about.

Anonymous, 04 Feb 2018Thing is, no matter if you buy a cheap or expensive Android... moreYeah, agreed... it also depends partially due to taxes, inflation, licensing, marketing, production costs... I mean; the market isn't the same around the globe, but hey! There are brands, quality, types and specs affordable to a wide range of pockets out there -

Alas, in each category they are even expensive than before! But also the tech on low end devices now is another league compared to a... say Nokia 1100a (Sniff; good ol' days: my first phone... great endurance, quality and antenna signal though... even better than a korean flagship inside of an elevator *cough* - Literally speaking? A brick that still gets the job done! Lol )

Whether we likes it or not, phone companies are business not charities. They figured this is the way to maximize profit - their primary interests.

Too bad the customers' interests don't align with theirs.

Android & iOS are in end line of themselves! There is no neo useful innovation!! The only innovation (2018) it is: overpricing when battery life or daily uses is not good

lol who's going to say they want to pay more for a phone? besides, I actually prefer midrange phones for many other reasons than price so ridiculously overpriced phones like the iphone x make no difference to me.
