Comparing a phone camera to a Compact, Mirrorless, or DSLR camera is like comparing a phone CPU vs computer CPU. Having 8GB phone RAM doesn't mean it's more powerful than 4GB computer RAM. In reality, that 8GB phone RAM will have a hard time or even fail to handle the capacity that a 4GB computer RAM is having. But I know other people would say "we are talking about cameras"; yes, they will never be the same because they have different scale, architecture, performance, etc. Yes, phone cameras have good shots and are getting better everyday, but they won't have the equal performance or won't go on par with the performance of professional cameras which are way ahead. If you don't get the idea, then you might wanna do a research.

Phone cameras are way behind high end Compacts, Mirrorless, and DSLRs. Tell me a phone that can surpass (for example) an RX100 M5, and I would laugh at you lol. Trust me, any flagship camera phones out there will struggle in low light, professional cameras do that at ease. Phones have low native ISO, or only relying on boosting extended ISO, and low shutter speed. Oh well, nothing to do here, anyone here who thinks phone are superior then professional cameras are funny. Hahaha

Anonymous, 14 Feb 2018That's very wrong. I wonder whether you guys never compared... moreYeah, that´s why all the photographers around the globe now use (Google!!) smartphones for their jobs. LOL

Even HDR+ can´t replace a bigger sensor with high quality lenses. HDR+ even can´t replace old Nokia 1020 or 808 in terms of photo quality. It´s nonsense and picture quality especially in low light situations (but also for details and clarity in day light) proves it.

I use Pixel 2 and the "old" Pixel and I had Galaxy S8, Sony XZP and Huawei P10. None of these camera phones can compete with my 1" 400-Euro-camera.

Details of my "real" camera are much better, DR is sometimes similar, in low light even Pixel 2 is full of noise and if you only look at street lamps and other city scenes in low light you can see how badly a tiny sensor and cheap optics handle it. Every photo on flickr and elsewhere proves it. And when I use a DSLR the differences are even bigger. None of the phones of today with their 30-Euro-cameras can replace a real camera. Even not with HDR+.

Maybe you should search photos of high-end smartphones on flickr and search some photos of real cameras. The quality of a 1" sensor compact camera is still way better, especially in low light scenarios.

Smartphone industry is a big marketing machine which claims to offer better photo quality with every single new model. It´s a big lie because six year old Nokia phones had better photo quality with their big sensors and high quality lenses than even iPhone X and Pixel 2. That´s the reality and we can only hope that this year Huawei and Sony change this game a little bit.

Some people just don't know the total difference between phone cameras and mirrorless, compacts, and FFs. Just when a phone does have 12mp-41mp, f/1.6, 960fps, or HDR doesn't mean it's better, even if a phone have those features, a simple RX100 (M3-M5), G7x M2, or LX100 can kill that phone, a good example is Low Light lol. BionzX, Venus, Digic, etc are too powerful to match lol.
