But if you install a program onto a PC that causes your hard disk to be active 24/7 therefore physically wearing the hardware until it's broken within the warranty period, who do you think will be responsible for replacing the unit? The hardware manufacturer or the software company?

Azri, 05 Aug 2011I don't understand phone manufacturers. Say I buy a PC from... moreYou missed the point, buddy. Vista and win 7 are both legit versions. It's like an upgrade. And swapping manufacturer ROM with some custom crap is like playing wild at your own risk. You're certainly allowed to do anything with your phone. But you just can't whine once a crappy custom ROM bricks your phone.

Azri, 05 Aug 2011I don't understand phone manufacturers. Say I buy a PC from... moreThe difference therein, is that a Custom ROM is not a licensed, legal product in the commercial sense of the word: there is no one to be held accountable for damages but yourself (you take the risk when you install a custom ROM). This is not the case when you install another PAID version of, say, Windows. Both versions of Windows are built for that PC.
Custom bootloaders should be compared with opening your PC and adding/removing/replacing parts of your configuration. And hey, that also voids your warranty! Odd. :)

To me it only makes sense, the manner of communication just isn't very political from HTC.
Get that PR in order... this can cost them a lot of (potential) customers.

When you intentionally make changes to any product you baught, you have to accept the consequence that you will no longer have the warranty for it. It`s as simple as that.

I don't understand phone manufacturers. Say I buy a PC from Dell with Vista pre-installed. After 2 months I update to Win7. DOES IT VOID MY WARRANTY???? Of course not!
I guess we should only buy Android phones from Google...

Following the same route as Sony Ericsson and their play devices...
Promising Support for Unlocking bootloaders and then voiding their warranty..
Although guys over at XDA developers have found a way to relock the bootloaders for the SE phones ;)
Guess they thought even they wil be able to ape SE and get away with it

Anonymous, 05 Aug 2011What kind of twisted logic is that? What if your phone die... moreI sense you're pro-consumer. Sorry but I'm mostly pro-manufacturer. My thinking always prioritizes the manufacturer/corporate entity followed by the shareholders while the consumers are always at the bottom of the list.

They should only be voiding warranties around bricked devices, not just flat out voiding warranties full-stop. Also, there wouldn't be such an active custom rom community if HTC pulled their finger out and promptly fixed bugs in their firmware.

HTC is just doing what's best. Anyone who would flash a custom ROM should not be entitled for a warranty.

Santa Claus , 04 Aug 2011if you don't know what it is look it up. but since you don'... moreHey Mr. Santa Claus, don't be a bad man now... It's not that only geeks like you and me are interested in this story, there are also a lot of telco employees and manufacturers etc like me, checking out GSMA and being interested in HTC's bootloader policy. And I would wish a company would say "We don't care about you rooting your device... Here, let us help you and knock yourself out. Just don't break it yourself"

lalitsehgal21, 04 Aug 2011They are now simply takingadvantage of customers....i will ... moreYes! You should do that. Definitively if you want costumer care and good on time updates you should dump HTC and go to samsung... LOL Smooth moove! LOL
That would be like having a Toyota and wanting to have a much reliable car buying an old Fiat.
Seriously, if you are disappointed with HTC and want more quality and better costumer service don't go looking for that on Samsung or LG...trust me on this one.

Now that has both advantage and disadvantage. The advantage is that we can load custom roms on them. But the disadvantage is hTC just possibly ruled out any chance of official android updates, specially to its mid-range devices. Now,that might be in the mind of some customers. But its good that hTC took this step, looking into the concerns of their customers.
