It is not surprising that Home Max of Google beats HomePod of Apple in sound quality. First, it is more expensive by $50. ($400 vs $350) Second, it has much larger enclosure and bit larger woofer (4.5" vs 4") , both are good for low frequency sound. And Home Max is unidirectional, which is good for high-frequency sound, vs omni-directional HomePod. So Home Max should sound much better than HomePod.

Buy Home Max, if larger speaker is well becoming and fitting for your room, else buy smaller HomePod or Solos.

Note7 owner, 14 Feb 2018They are really blind if they chose Google over Apple's design. it was behind a screen, so I don't think design played a part... try again

It goes to show that Apple are really paying media to write top reviews of their products

That's how they should test, a blind test under equal conditions.

Remove the Apple logo and the Homepod basically becomes an overpriced not-so-smart speaker.

They are really blind if they chose Google over Apple's design.

Google’s algorithm that allows the speaker to automatically tweak equalizer settings to push out the best sound depending strictly on what the layout of the room is, as picked up by its internal microphones. If this sounds familiar, it’s because it’s reminiscent of what Apple talked up with its Apple HomePod. ( taken from tech radar review of the home max and can be confirmed in several others reviews )

AnonD-737566, 14 Feb 2018Yeah and the guy put a green sheet in front of the home pod same sheet on front of the others one.

Google home max also detect object wall ect and adapt sound still beaten homepod.

sorry but stop trying to find excuses.

blind test is always better as we see the real winner and not a winner based on brand as all others review.

For great sounding experience, I still prefer Harman Kardon speaker, no matter what type of speaker..

Not to mention sonos got more speakers like for 250 and 500. Surely those would blow off the competition. In sonos case you pay mostly for sound, not a brand overprice.

EDIT - It looks like Homepod has a feature called Spatial Awareness. It can detect walls and direct sound according to its position. I don't know if others can do that or not. I was wrong, My bad!
