Google Pixel 2 users reporting device heating and battery life issues after February update

17 February 2018
A lot of users, both at Reddit as well as Google's own forums, are complaining about their units getting warm (even with normal usage) and battery draining comparatively faster.

With my Pixel 2 phone, the battery life was good prior to 8.1.0 OS update in December. The battery level goes from 100 to 98% in about 30 minutes of standby (no video, no gaming/media, no calls or browser activities). Overnight battery drain is from 100 to about 92% battery level (again, in standby). The recent February security update did not help. With the earlier 8.0 OS the overnight battery drain was from 100 to 98%.

My battery life is similar to before but I can relate to the heating problem. Opened snapchat, forgot to close the phone and when I came back, the phone was hot af. Didn’t do that before. Hope it gets fixed

I am a Pixel 2 user and yes my device also heats up when I use some particular apps or play game... I am too disappointed on this matter. The batter is also not so much durable as expected!

It is impressive how they managed to produce such a consistently bad phone.

Who wants to buy a crappy phone without a 3.5mm jack? The Pixel phone should be consigned to the dustbin of history ASAP.

AnonD-422306, 18 Feb 2018True though, after seeing so many complaints about the Pixe... moreGoogle quality and desgin are crap since nexus phones nothing new. Used all nexus except nexus 1 then went back again to pixel 2 xl in my opioinon pixel 2 xl the Best google phone to date. But still has quality issues like One of the worst phone when it comes to call quality, some time phone stuck when someone calls you and can’t answer the call, the 2 front speakers has some disturation sound and tiny sound plus the famous screen burn in issue, but i didn’t face heating issue like pixel one that made by Htc it does has this issue. Anyway google needs to focus in qulaity next time if they want to compete with Samsung and Apple.

I really wish all manufacturers were like Samsung regarding OS updates. They really are on the ball. They tested Oreo extensively by way of a Beta, then they pulled it when there were reports of some devices rebooting after the Oreo update straight away.

It's just this relentless pursuit of perfection by Samsung and the way they put their Customers user expeience at the heart of everything they do that ensures their loyal fans coming back time and time again for more.

True though, after seeing so many complaints about the Pixel 2, I am really questioning Google's efforts into making this phone a success. Being a Pixel 2 XL owner myself, I haven't encountered any of the issues that has come up so far including this one, but the fact that quite a number of people are experiencing it means that their standardization in quality is very low. Not impressed by Google's choice to choose LG as their Pixel creator, better off with Huawei I think, seeing as to how the 6P turned out fine.

Yes. After the Feb update my phone is heating up and the battery is running out fast

Oreo update on my Nexus 6P triggered the first occurrence of bootloops. I've fixed that by (obviously) unofficial images which disabled big cores in my SoC altogether. Nevertheless, the OS would frequently freeze, making constant restarts mandatory. Of course, this hasn't been fixed till this day so I'm just using the previous version which still supports stable Xposed Framework. I couldn't be more disappointed with Google phone quality.

Android Fan, 18 Feb 2018It is common to have such issues after OS upgrade and it is... moreIf you're gonna defend Pixel, the most bug-ridden, low quality flagship android phone ever made using scraps from LG's rejected parts dept, then don't try to rubbish Apple because it is just as bad as the iPhone.

don't kid yourself thinking Pixel is in the same league as other android flagships. It's a disgrace on Android.

It is common to have such issues after OS upgrade and it is common across all OEM devices. it is best to clean cache and all before update and restart it. check background apps and all. Anyway it will eventually goes away after a few days and reset it. Complains are often heard more than praise of cuz u will see more negative stuffs on forums. Anyway i have my Pixel 2 XL and Pixel 1 XL, both are superb! i ditched my iPhone for good.

                                This happens to me too!

Not to mention the swiping issue, when its impossible to answer calls out get to use the lockscreen shortcuts.
The Feb update didn't solve this, surprisingly.

No problems on mine. Sucks for those affected. At least I know Google will fix soon. Still better than the latest few iOS buggy updates.

I bought this Pixel 2 few months ago, n never experienced this issue till recently. It gets pretty hot and I sometimes opened the case thinking that was the cause. But since it's a problem common with others, maybe there is wrong in that update. Battery life also drains like hella quick.

AnonD-731943, 17 Feb 2018I used to own the z2. camera was NOT good at all average at... moreIn today's standard, it's no longer up with the bests, but during its time, it was the most advanced in terms of hardware.
Idk, but to me, the Z2 had the best camera in its prime, as even the iPhone 5s and Galaxy S5 took a hard time against it.

Oreo is terribly unfinished. It causes a series of strange issues across various devices. Maybe we should all wait before atleast the major glitches are resolved.
I wish there were more Operating System options on smartphones.
