Apple and Samsung dont need to redesign the design (S7 and S8 identical & dont ask iP6-7-X). You're right it looks more comfortable to hold than the previous Sony sharp edges. But if that decision, goodbye beautiful omnibalance design.

I calculated from the photo that the XZ2 compact is around 140x65mm. It's approximately 10mm taller than the XZ1 compact which is 129mm. I wish they stuck to a real compact size. I like the rounded corners so they don't stab your legs, and lets say this adds 3-4mm to the height, but at least stay below 135mm. 130mm is the maximum that will fit in most side pants pockets, anything longer and it will be uncomfortable when you try to sit down or ride a bicycle. I was waiting for the XZ2 compact, but I might now consider the older XZ1 compact since it's much shorter.

No no no! This is no good! Sony had to stick to their previous design, just to trim bezels a bit and make a compact even more compact! Make it slimmer, I have a slim 5 inch phone the battery life is amazing, so it's not necessary to make such a fatty phone. Why do I need a 5 inch display, the whole purpose of a compact but s that it has a cute lil screen, Sony has a lot of big screen options xz1, premium LA whatever, leave mini alone, it should be COMPACT! Secondly the side fingerprint was great and so unique, but no they moved it to the back now Sony looks like 1000 other phones, so boring! They just had to improve their camera once and for all, this is a real problem they have to take care of! I didn't get xz1 compact because of the poor image quality, it's not worth 500,400€ with such a trashy camera! And now they messed their design as well...such a deception! Maybe they will have a normal compact in the future..

Then I just saw a middle range Chinese nova phone, even its cam is better and it's out of metal not some kind of plastic! I was waiting for Sony to make another compact phone, their task was easy keep it this way, probably make it more compact and slim and improve the camera!! But no...they have to do something like this. Disappointed...

Loop Surface and Omnibalance designs both are more gorgeous than this fat obese Captain Colonel of KFC.
This new design is making me hating Sony. No way this design is making Sony phones more recognised unlike their current crown jewel Sony Xperia XZ Premium.Who is the designer in charge? I want to give you mid finger.

It is so sad that some were complaining about thick bezel. Until Sony trimmed them down they are still complaining about blah blah blah. Anyway, this is even more better than you China phones.

Display panel looks like AMOLED too me, the dark blacks on the photo is a clue.

I never was a fan of these sony brocks, ok only Z3 compact, but this time around I think they nailed it!
Although that fat back in the middle looks a bit funky, but still a nice looking phone.
Might seriously consider it as my next phone.. S9 is still my main upgrade atm. Going from now almost 4yr old galaxy alpha.

We are not in some Hollywood/star warz/ alien movie here, these people complaining about the design of XZ2 should return to planet earth before they go missing in orbit. I blame Sony designers for spoiling the world with designs that are simply sheer class, ergonomically and otherwise, year after year. Really, it's not you guys fault.
