good luck outselling the S8. Many friends of mine won't update theirs.

odd number models would not sell better than even number models.
even number models have major upgrade, on look, hardware, soc micron process, maybe even the ram, storage amount. only the camera stay unchanged
odd number models has upgrade on camera only.
look back on the s6, s7, s8. exactly in this practice.
if only get a new one every 2 years, better spend on the even number models.

Second. the grills. S9 has MUCH more prominent speakers, and the earpiece is larger.
the charge port is more centered in S9. while in s8 it turns a bit more toward the top.
the curves are more gentle in S9 (a la Note 8 style)
and these are the tiny details.
Large detail: better placed fps. but even a blind person can tell that.

It won't sell more because samsung didn't put a double camera on the S9.
Not all people want a big screen phone, but all people that buy flagship phones want the best technology... knowing the regular S9 misses one camera, they will shop somewhere for a similar screen phone with top cameras.

I see everyone complain about the price, but it's actually priced better than I expected.
For starters, in the US it's an absolute bargain. At $720/840, it's not only a better phone than the iphone X, the plus is also $160 cheaper. Really great pricing there
In Europe, it's quite a bit more expensive, at 950 euros for the plus($1200). It's 50% more expensive than in the US. However, Samsung's really good buyback system(which gives you 100E + the value of the phone) makes the price manageable. You can slash almost 300E with a working S7 edge and 200E with a S6 edge. Now, 500/650E and your 2 year old phone for a new flagship isn't really that much

Samsung is lost, the S8 was the major upgrade. The S9 is too similar to the S9. People will just buy the S8 and current S8 owners wont upgrade because theres no upgrade.
No improvements to battery when Huawei are offering 4000mah batteries? No wonder they are losing to them. Samsung needs to get off its high horse and at least update the S8....

My S7 still holds up well, so why not wait a year for what has to be a pretty special s10 edition?

I dont think this year is a good year for smartphone industry. Next year is a year for 5G & non new released phone at this moment support 5G. Myself also think twice to upgrade or wait till next year..

people need to understand. EVERY PHONE is for EVERY person. not just the fans of the brand. The S9 is not just for samsung users. A Xiaomi user can come too (for example) and swap to the S9 if xe wants. and vice versa.

Azmo, 27 Feb 2018S9 is a good phone, with one massive flaw: It has the exact... moreFor the same price as the Note 8. you can get MUCH more oomph from the chipset. (if it's exynos. For qualcomm it's just "more Oomph".) A variable aperture camera. (f/1.5 for night shots, which is incredibly bright. Our eyes for comparation are just F/1.65 and the F/2.4 for daylight shot. which is ABSULUTELY fine for the daylight pictures, I would get a bit cocky and request also in the middle but that's just a nitty gritty)
Stereo speakers. (note 8 has just one grille for sound. but you can enjoy stereo sound with earphones and headphones like any phone) MUCH more comfortable FPS location. (I have note 8 and it's TOO dang high for my fingers. And I got pianist fingers. long and slender) and enjoying from day 1 Android Oreo WITH project treble. (atleast I hope.)

People always say the same thing every year like "why upgrade your phone when everything is almost the same as the new model". They say that too when Samsung released the S8 and S7. Well, practically the upgrade is mainly for 2 years old model generation gap. If you want to upgrade every year don't complain so much about the model being similar in a year gap. I don't know why human mindset is dumber each year.
