I do find it interesting that the Essential PH-1 is the first real smartphone to use the notch but that is completely overlooked in this article...

The notch is spreading because Chinese manufacturers are crazy about Apple and they're setting a trend for other manufacturers because of top-notch (get it?) sales.

IMHO I think if google will follow the notch craze, in the end it would only be samsung who will face apple. As they are the only company with innovation and does not easily follow trends. I mean there phones need optimizations(but every phone is not lag free forever) but we get the small details that matters, like the headphone jack, wireless charging, cool infinity display, the pen for artist like me..

As long as other companies copy Apple phones design they will never be even close to Apple. They will be nothing but pale and affordable copies of top trending phones.

Apple and their Chinese copycats are ruining the mobile industry. I could care less of the silly notch. I just don't want to hold a glass-back, 18:9 bezel-less phone. I hated curved displays which is why I couldn't stand the S7 edge when I had it. I had a Sharp Aquos Crystal for two weeks and hated it too for typing.
Only phones on my radar is perhaps getting another Google Pixel again from 2016. Or Xperia XZ1 Compact or XA2. The XZ1C could be the last Compact with headphone jack and flagship SoC. Sony is ridding of headphone jack. Boo! To add insult, they went back to glass-backs.

Losing headphone jack. Adding ugly notches and weird aspect ratios to satisfy this bezel-less thirst some of us never asked for. Not one phone from MWC wowed me. The S9 is the S8 with a better camera.
I really hate Apple's cancerous influence. I rarely go on here anymore or check reviews on YouTube. Mobile industry is so boring now. Phones I like is the Xperia XZ1 or XA2. That's it. Normal aspect ratio with headphone jack.
It's a snoozer year in mobile like last year to me. I have or had so many phones released from 2016 because that's the last good year in mobile. It didn't trend to no headphone jack, bezel-less, and ugly notches yet.

The writer based his views on a single perspective. Why not see it as 'a fruit phone does some tricks to charge exorbitant amount...whereas rice phones do it, sometimes better to charge relatively small amount' - so that the lower bugdet class of people (the majority) can enjoy such fancy tricks.

It's good that so many companies and products are embracing the notch style. It would make my next smartphone purchase a lot easier, without the f...ing notch.
P.S. At least Sony and Samsung are true to their style, design wise.

I don't mind the notch. It allows for important top bar info while keeping it tucked away.
Apple's solution is just fine. Regular Androids allows for way too much mostly unimportant notification icons on top, making it cluttered and too busy to grasp at a glance.
I wish screens were not getting so tall and skinny though. It's mostly so that marketing can make claims of larger screen sizes with smaller footprint, but for consuming media other than long lists it's not optimal. 16x9 below the notch seems about perfect.
