With billions of training data, their AI can get accurate recognition quite easily. Everything that's not recognized is then blurred. I don't have any Pixel device, but I have the camera app port. Comparing with result from my Mi Note 3's wide + tele, the blur is more rough. If your background surface is not flat, e.g. taking from 45° degree, my Mi Note 3 will produce gradual blur, while the pixel camera doesn't.

Sorry, it's a cat, too small in gsmarena page :p. The fact remains that google has to extract depth info from a 2D image, recognize objects, try to calculate wich is near and wich is far, (what happens if the object is "thic"?). With 2 images with different "zoom", is "easy" to determine what is near and what is far. Plus a longer focal distance gives you better face portraits (less distorted by wide angle, pros use 85-90mm for portrait). All of this of course is far far less good than "natural" bokeh (big sensor+low F number)

So does this mean that other OEMs can implement this feature in their current phones by releasing an OTA update? Like Apple in it’s older phone like 6s and SE? Or Samsung in its budget series?

Any apps in Andriod / Istore which have this ? Any names /suggestions . Or Am I impatient.

It's really amazing that google managed to do portrait mode better than their competitors even with a single camera. It's even more amazing that they're not afraid to share their impressive coding.

                  Kudos to you Google!

Dang! This is will great for Normal lens + Wide lens dual camera!

Tele lens is good but not much pratically like wide notch, even thought if main camera has great quality then 2X zooming is will be still okay.

What would be interesting to me is to know how the portrait mode of the moto 5gs+ works, because I'm pretty sure it doesn't use the second, "dedicated depth camera" or the info from that camera is pretttttty bad

does Google allow others to copy or does Google only allow Android phone make to use it but they cant peek inside the code itself?

Let every Android phone have top quality camera firmware available.

It would make Android a much more desirable operating system.
