The most shallowest reasoning for having an obstructive sensor horizontal bar - "... gives character".
Who ever came up with the idea the way it is for it, they must be laughing at the other companies replicating this silly screen horns setup. It looks stupid. We all know the face unlock is not so secured, and harder than a simple fingerprint unlock.

I don't really mind the notch, but I also have no need for a front-facing camera or other gizmos, so I'd prefer a completely bezel-less and regular shaped screens.

Apple notch looks great - for an iPhone!
It doesn't fit in Android ecosystem, looks terrible and out of place!
Please just get rid of those ugly Androids with a notch! bluh

The iPhone X doesn't even gain screen size, since all the notifications have to go on a separate line, which occupies as much space as a common bezel+notification area. And it simply looks bad in games and videos, since you can't actually use that space.

True story is, as iPhone X failed in the market they decided to reduce production. Since Samsung was in charge for producing the display they got plenty of excess stock. To get rid of this and save company from big loss they started to sell this at cheap bulk price targeted at Chinese manufactures. Since this deal was a great value for money many manufacturers decided to go with this notched screen.

Both the notch of the iphone and the edge screen on the S line from Samsung are stupid and dumb.
Try to play a movie full screen on both and you'll see what I mean. You loose content!
So no, I'll pass on both!
Give me a top and bottom bezel if that means I can watch a movie in fullscreen mode without losing part of the movie.
How on earth is this a positive thing? There is NO advantage!
I want a normal, flat screen, without that HORRIBLE NOTCH, or without screen edges, or even without those stupid round corners!

I'm glad to have an Essential PH-1. There fit like 8-10 Symbols on each side of the notch --> saves a lot of space compared to regular bezels.
What I really hate with the notch is all the people saying "Uhh, it's an I-Phone clone" sicne Apple wasn't the first with this (in my oppinion) great idea to save 5mm in height with a notch.
But for sure, it's a question of taste if you want straight cuts or a notch smiling at you.

The notch is uglier than full bezel. But I also think the edge display on the Samsungs are ugly. That's why I use iPhone 8 with the 'ancient' bezels which I prefer over the notch and edge. And it has the most important feature for me, which is the front fingerprint scanner ;)

The problem is when you consider the notch anywhere else, would I want it on a TV? No. a laptop? No. Thankfully for Apple an ever expanding screen size has allowed them to fit a notch in with an illusion that people are getting more screen space anyway, which is probably what has helped turn the tide on first impressions because people aren't losing real screen space. Well actually, as we know, it does actually end up creating an awkward way of putting the actual usable screen viewing (for videos, apps, games etc.) to no better than the iphone 8 plus. I don't understand how when most phone users seem obsessed with getting less bezels, better form factor, better usage of screen space etc. that this is so obviously ignored when the iphone basically has these issues created by the notch.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to hate and if I looked at the notch I do actually find some visual appeal to it, it has a fundamental visual style that is appealing but overall it's functionally bad design with wasted space and for video viewing it would most likely irritate me. I don't want to buy a phone and feel like I've been tricked into thinking the screen is more useful than it is, that parts won't be used for video etc or if they were it'd obscure vision anyway. Functionally it's not a great design (especially how apple implements it), it looks cool when you're looking at phones in a shop but usage wise I can't understand ever really wanting one. As stated, if I had one on my TV or laptop or tablet I'd not really like it, it just makes the camera staring at you feel more obvious too.

I will never buy a phone with a notch. Apart from the fact that it is hideous, it also intervenes with full-screen applications. Not to mention it diminishes the number of notifications that can be shown at all time in the status bar and I have 6+ on a regular basis. I can remember when they first showed a notch patent from Samsung before the iPhone X was a thing and really hoped they wouldn't go there. So it's a big no-no for me.
