Comparing the sizes of flagship chipsets: Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei and Apple

25 March 2018
All four chipsets are built on 10nm processes (though in different fabs). Which company spent more on a large chip?

So which chipset is going to last longer? I have seen a comment somewhere that saying kirin will last longer cus of its NPU .

Well apple outpreform rest of competitors but the price to make one chip is really low but its pple speciality to make a 500% profit on everything.

Vegetaholic, 24 Mar 2018Well, everybody knows size matters. A series was all the ti... morekirin is know a higher mid-end chip-set its not an flagship chip not anymore so we shouldn't compare it with the flagship one.in real world performance i don't think there will be any difference so performance wise its still good but not great and kirin build smart-phone will get older sooner then the other flagship smart-phones. still i like huawei build phone.

Anonymous, 24 Mar 2018I would bet if the A11 would run anything else than iOS, it... moreIt has nothing to do with optimization, those benchmark test raw CPU and GPU power regarding OS it runs. All of those benchmarks run same tasks regarding OS, so in this case OS has nothing to do with it. What you see is perfect representation of those chipset capabilities. One of the reasons iOS is so smooth is because of the amazing A chipset power, if you realize iOS became as feature rich as Android, it is not so light as before. Optimizations does their part, but if you not realize yet, Samsung and Hawei created chipsets not just to compete with Snapdragon but so they can optimize Android around their chipset. That is mean you already have optimized Android if you use Exynos or Kirin phones, think about it :)

AnonD-347233, 23 Mar 2018at first i thought apple a11 is 1.5 or 2 years ahead of its... moreExactly, it was minimum 2 year ahead any new android chipset, still are if compare it with Kirin or Snapdragon, but Samsung now really closed the gap dramatically and I give a praise for that

Well, everybody knows size matters. A series was all the time bigger in size than rest of android chipsets. Now we see Exynos 9810 is huge and makes it with much better performance than rest except A11. This is there magic comes from Apple, basically smallest one(No modem) but beats all of them. Snapdragon only can brag about potent gpu, but if you look in very demanding benchmark basemark 3.1 metal shows massive throttling of gpu in promoted use where it looses to A and Exynos chipsets, so after all nothing really great about Sanpdragon. I didint mention Kirin because where is nothing to mention about, obviously worst chipset and only can compete with next year chipsets, so just ignore it :)

I would bet if the A11 would run anything else than iOS, it would do terrible. The keyword is optimization. If you have a processor that is designed to literally run only one specific OS, and that OS only, you can optimize the shit out of it. Android however is a lot harder to optimize for, since there's a ton of ROM configurations, hardware differences, etc. Out there you need to take into account. So it's kind of unfair in general to compare Android devices to iOS devices, since they're in a completely different kind of league.

What kills me here is the Benchmark ES3.1/Metal test and the GFX 3.1 Manhattan test are comparing results that are using OpenGL 3.1 to Apples Metal, which Metal is closer to Vulkan graphics. Yet on Android the tests are using OpenGL. Clearly this is not a fair comparison. So why are these benchmark tests even used? They should be updated to use Vulkan graphics on Android now. It's not like it isn't supported. Vulkan graphics was added in Android 7 and above, or since 2016. Come on make these benchmark tests more fair for 2018. Every Android flagship and mid range, as well as a number of low range Android smartphones support Vulkan graphics nowadays.

Please be fair to Huawei when comparing the best amongst the best.

Apple = Using the best topline Apple X
Sony = Using the best top and newest XZ2
Samsung = Using the top new S9+
Huawei = Using the 2nd top flaship from the Mate 10 Series.......why the heck is the unfairness? You guys should use Mate 10 Pro instead.........why not using for a more fair comparison...............scare it beat the rest?
