I'm starting to see odd comments of problems with 8.1 with Nokia 5.

The 8.1 update in Germany left my Nokia 5 almost useless. The home and overview buttons do not work and the screen do not show any notifications. Really disappointing.

Android lags like hell on any budget phone. Thats just its nature. Stock or not makes very little difference.
But the world has gotten used to buggy, laggy android, and the OS itself has improved a lot over the years. Its not very good, but its usable, and its what the people want.
As for HMD, they have no option but to use Android, and stock android is cheap because they need to spend minimum on software and have advantages in marketing by calling it 'pure' and 'secure' instead of 'plain' and 'featureless'. And it seems this is working. I know a few people who bought Nokia 5 and they are very happy with its speed and performance. Perhaps you got a bad unit?

Do not, I repeat, do NOT BUY THIS PHONE. The only thing good about this phone is it's built quality, other than that it's a sad excuse for a phone.
It's lagging, closing background apps, not working as it should, hangs, slow downs, constant problems since day one.
Had to factory reset once I got 8.0 to make it work normal, and it worked great, for about a day. After that it went back to the crappy laggy way of work.
It's not work $50 let alone anything over that.
Nokia is not back, nor are their quality phones. I just don't get how can you have stock android and mess up sooooo much.

But thats not the point. The point is, when Google adds garbage to the phones (such as Gmail and Play this and play that), people consider it a good thing.
But when OEMs do, its bloat.
Never mind the fact that some OEMs like Blackberry and Sony add great softwares which counter the crap put by google and even make browsing the phone better and faster.
If you don't have access to a blackberry priv, check the UI on GsmArenas review. And compare the multi tasking menu with so called pure google crap android.
Its clear the pure android is inferior to blackberrys android.
Now trolls on the internet will say that blackberry doesnt sell. But thats not the point.
'Bloat' by Sony and Blackberry is better than the crappy Google apps infested 'pure' android.

Here's the thing now: Google apps are bloatware, if they are NOT, then neither is anything put on top by Xiomai, Samsung and others.
Its not that I like the garbage put on by Samsung. I hate it. But its a matter of principle, a matter of being fair and not a blind sheep follower.
When Samsung and LG put extra features (like split screen multi tasking) it was bloat, when Google does it, its progress.
This kind of idiotic attitude is prevalent amongst the supposedly smart and tech savvy fans on internet blogs as well as the article writers themselves.
So decide on one and end this. Just dont be a hypocrite.

You have no ideea what a company and OS means. By your logic, messages app, call app, peoples app, they are all blotware. Actually, by your logic, people should receive a phone with one app: settings. But wait, that has some google bloatware in it too, Clock. I am sorry but not everybody wants to play install and search for apps that work, for mounths, you know? There are people that actually work, and use their phone for what was made for, not for playing zumba. Puting selfies on instagram or their life on facebook. Now, before talking again, revise your attitude. You just discovered technoligy and screem like you are the only one. I used symbian in 2001, i can tell by your attitude, back then you were probably at the age of 1 or not born yet. So keep it low, Stop trying to teach people what they know ignoring what they tell you, you might actually learn something.

And heres lesson number 2:
Go to settings, select apps and disable all the garbage that you dont need, whether its by google or the device maker.
Won't save you space, but it will save RAM.
Also disable the play store and download APK Pure app.
This service removes Googles geo restrictions and also includes apps that Google doesn't want you to download.
So stop being a blind google sheep and download the apps that you want to, and not which google wants you to. You payed for this phone, so you should use it as you wish to without any arm twisting by a milti billion usd corporation.
I know its painful at first to use your own brain instead of blindly accepting what garbage is thrown your way, but trust me, it gets easy.

All your garbage points have been replied to already. I never said Sony doesnt put Googles softwares. So learn how to read.
What you call pure android IS NOT pure. It has googles garbage in it.
Amazon is in top 3 tablet sellers despite selling in only a handful of the 190+ countries on the planet. In any case, they can sell one tablet a year, doesn't make a difference. They still make better software. Fire OS is not pure android either, but its more efficient on low end hardware.
So Play Books, movies, Gmail and all other apps are bloatware garbage which most people dont need, or already have them. OEMs put there own mail app (which are often better than Googles) or you can download a third party one (which are mostly better than gmail)
Search can be performed by digital assistant and browser apps.
So yes google apps are
1) redundant
2) take space
3) consume ram
4) have better alternatives available in almost all cases
5) CANT BE UNINSTALLED
So yes they are bloatware. Google can add all it wants, if it cant be uninstalled, its garbage.

Hope the UK gets the Android 8.1 update soon for Nokia 5.
It's not a bad phone but updates good to fix bugs and improve performance.

Thats just silly. Like I have already said, Amazon has Fire os which is very successful, especially considering they sell in only a handful on countries.

Nokia XL didnt fail, they were cancelled by Microsoft without being given much time. For the short time that they were sold, they did reasonably well considering the fact that Elop was reluctant as well. He was fully into Windows and never serious about Android.
In any case, Nokia XL was much better than any crap that you were using at that time (in the same price range)
So to conclude: The so called pure Android used by HMD and Moto is just another bloated Android version filled with Googles garbage.Companies like Sony and Xiaomi are doing there bit to improve it, but we need another effort like Nokia XL and Amazons Fire OS isnt enough since they are not global.
