I am a person who doesn'... moreWell if the fault is mechanical, it must be on your specimen, as not ALL see it...
I'm NOT saying that this is your fault, and I'm NOT suggesting to fiddle with all kind of managing software.
I simply suggest to (temporarily) install something that can help you in pinpointing what is actually the culprit. It could be some pre-installed stuff, perhaps even marked as system, that still could be disabled.
Unless there is a severe electrical error, a device do not produce substantial heat unless it does 'something'... (This goes for any device any brand)
And as it happen when you expect it not to do anything substantial, it must be some bad software that does 'something' that wastes your battery and heats the device.

I am a person who doesn't need an anti virus on PC because I consider the human brain to be the best anti virus. So I know exactly whats installed and whats disabled. I have also tried all sorts of cache cleaning, ram boosting, battery checking and repairing apps.
The fault is a mechanical one and I bought the device overseas so warranty is useless.
I have also read other reviewers online complaining about the same issue. Too be fair, all mobiles are like travel websites; they have a high number of complaints online. But for the Priv, the situation seems to be worse than most

Gapps are bloatware, 06 Apr 2018Using Firefox to read news for 5 minutes isn't heavy usage ... moreIf your Priv on 6.0.1 heats up on five minutes use of reading news in Firefox, it sounds like there EITHER is something else installed that get triggered OR there are something wrong with your specimen.
Even if you crank up the display to max brightness, it should not do it that quick.
I strongly suggest you to (temporarily) install a battery surveying app for a charge cycle to find out what exactly is eating away your battery. You could be in for a surprise that something in the background is the real culprit.

In all probability they had already spun down their tools for including Priv in their regularly scheduled OS builds and QA verification cycles, so it took them longer than normal to roll out a custom release off-cycle.

I bought the Priv only because of its sliding keyboard and the shortcuts they let you assign to each key. There really was no other alternative.
Still holding on to my Nokia E6.

After that: No. Heating is only a problem if you use it heavily.
The Priv is the least bad smart available - an easy win, as it is the only keyboard slider left... ;)
Much of the problems people experience with this is due to what is (pre)installed on it.
Do a clean-up, and it is GREAT for non-heavy usage.

But SURE if you expect to play a QHD game on it for a long time, you WILL get disappointed, as it is not dimensioned for that.
As ANY other device this device is a compromise. And the 808 is not the most efficient chipset - though better than the 810, that are notorious for the heating.

I thought Snapdragon 810 had heating issues not the 808.
In any case, device manufacturers are partly to blame too; SND 810 was much more powerful compared to 808 and yet the Lumia 950 used it without much problems.
I bought an Xperia Z4 tablet with 810 in it and it has zero over heating issues. In fact, its so good compared to Samsung and ipad, that Sonys failure in the tablet market leads me to conclude that consumers are fools who don't deserve good things.
In the same year if Nokia/Microsoft and Sony can use Snapdragon chips to make excellent hardware, then so can Backberry.

Although I no longer own a priv i'd be careful wanting an o.s update for it. The three programmable swipe gestures that allow users to skip to whatever commonly used app or shortcut they want from whatever app they're in without the need to go home or back is awesome. Those gestures are unavailable on nougat and oreo. Have tried using apps that claim to do the same thing, but they're generally unstable and don't always work the way they're supposed to. Most annoying sacrifice about getting rid of my priv.

No nougat & oreo annoying to most of us

I got a new Blackberry Priv just a week ago after my first one died a horrible death. It's sad, Blackberry has stopped supporting the Priv which was launched for 600-700$ but I know the current circumstances surrounding the company. I don't think BB is in a position to provide software support. The last security patch update was of October 2017 and it's April 2018 right now. Nougat won't come and so won't Oreo. I wonder if critical vulnerabilities like Wi-Fi CRACK, Blueborne, Spectre & Metldown will ever be fixed. I shouldn't be hopeful for a fix. I no longer care because I use my S7 as my daily driver due of better software support from Sammy.. The only reasons I like the Blackberry Priv is because of the design and the keyboard. Nothing beats the texting experience on the Blackberry Keyboard, both on virtual and physical keyboard. Big curved display, sliding mechanism and the portrait physical keyboard. There isn't anything similar in the market. The Blackberry Priv easily stands out in terms of design. This is my first Blackberry phone which also happened to be Blackberry's first Android smartphone. Probably my last Blackberry if there won't ever be a successor to it. For Priv 2, I'd expect these following specs -
1. Same form factor and design as the Priv. Don't like landscape Qwety Keyboard. Stronger materials like stainless steel frame, aluminium or glass back would be welcome change. I don't like feel my Priv will survive rough usage due to its build quality.
2. 5.5 inches dual curved 16:9 ratio display with trimmed bezels (80% STB ratio when not opened)) protected by Gorilla Glass 3 or 5, BlackBerry logo on the front and back. Don't like hypertall 18:9 displays yet.
3. A fingerprint sensor, preferably embedded in the power button on either of one side.
4. Snapdragon 660 SoC would be a nice upgrade. The original Priv heats up badly due to bad chipset, the notorious Snapdragon 808.
5. Better rear and front cameras with glass lens.
6. 4 GB RAM, 64 GB of Storage would be enough.
7. Dual SIM (Not hybrid SIM slot) with separate SD card slot.
8. 4000 mAh battery with wireless and fast charging support.
9. Redesign productivity tab. The current one looks horrible. In terms of software, I'd like it come with Oreo 8.1 and support for Treble out of box. Software updates for 3-4 years.
10. IP68 and US MIL STD certified.
Recently heard, Blackberry had struck a smartphone licensing deal with Optiemus in India to produce BlackBerry handsets in the future. Even a Blackberry device codenamed Ghost got teased not long ago. Nowadays, Blackberry is trying to generate money using their patent portfolio. I just hope the original BlackBerry can deliver a true successor to the Priv. KeyOne isn't my cup of tea.

Cool. I gave a priv to my wife. It annoyed me because it didn’t have the traditional BlackBerry form factor and was too androidy, having a hidden keyboard defeats the purpose of having 52 programmable shortcuts. Surprisingly my wif loves it and much prefers when compared to her previous xperias and iphones.
The only thing that stopped it from being the first bezeless device is the BlackBerry logo at the top (apparently bezeless devices are trendy now).
It is a beautiful device. Carbon fibre (which idiot tech tubers labelled as unpremium when compared to devices made out of beer can material or glass that shatters.).
Being their first android device it took about 12 months of updates to iron out the bugs and add old school BlackBerry productivity features (that most modern phones are still missing).
The biggest issue with it now is the snap dragon 808 chipset that drains battery and used to overheat. I disabled BlackBerry services and the hub on it, the battery life and performance is reasonable on it. At least when compared to most 2018 flagships that barely last a day. It certainly isn't good enough when compared to the keyones battery life.
I believe Qualcomm got sued for that dodgy chipset, privs performance issues were partly compensated by the 1 billion dollar payout to BlackBerry.

BB doesnt know how to make hardware anymore, but they have the best software.
All this pure Android hype is garbage. BBos, WebOS, Meego and yes, even Symbian were better. But all are gone now and the only hope for a proper OS was Blackberrys modification to Android on Priv. No hope for BB to succeed so now I'm using Sony as they have the best Android skin as well as good hardware.
If the Privs furnace can be brought down a couple of notches, I'd start using it again in a heartbeat.
