Galaxy S9 and S9+ use two different camera sensors: Sony and in-house

10 April 2018
Depending on where you buy an S9, you'll get either an IMX345 sensor or a Samsung ISOCELL Fast sensor.

I had a S7 edge with Samsung sensor & my mom's S7 has the Sony sensor. Both runs on the Exynos 8890 chips.I compared both taking picture of a same scene.I found them to be very similar in quality, sharpness & low light performance.Where I did find a difference is in color processing. The Sony sensor has a noticeable green yellow tint & red color is rendered orangish. The white balance is also warmer than normal white point. The Samsung one on the other hand has a purplish tint in some low light scene, but not as abundant as yellow tint of the Sony sensors.White balance was on point almost every time & reds are perfectly represented. My sister's S7 runs on Snapdragon 820 chip & has Sony image sensor. It is inferior to the other two mentioned above. It is noticeably noisy & lacking in details sometimes giving the pictured a oil painting look when zoomed in.It's my personal observation, but your opinion may vary.

Sony still the leader in camera sensors. Hehehe

Anonymous, 11 Apr 2018I had the s7 with Sony sensor and my gf had the Samsung and... moreOh please jeep talking about S7, I am talking about S8. And it produces amazing quality pictures, one of the best 2017 cameras. Did you even read article??? It clearly says you download app AIDA64, and it tells you which sensors it uses. Mine are all Samsung

Oppaii, 10 Apr 2018I still don't get it, Sony have the best Camera Sensors for... moreYou said it yourself. I'd they'd go for the best quality, they'd rival their own business. Samsung had to end it's camera business just to focus on phones. Sony won't do it, since it has a few bests like A9, A7 or RX Series :)

Vegetaholic, 11 Apr 2018Lol, isocell sensors are one of the best in class with Sony... moreI had the s7 with Sony sensor and my gf had the Samsung and on a PC when you take the same pic there is a difference, the Sony is sharper, better. Though on a phone you'd probably not notic. Beside how can you tell if you didn't have both????
I'd rather have atje best picture right now.because in the future when 40 or 100 mp is standard I don't want my old picture to seem more awful than they would at the time.
Just like why I always video on 4K

However their dual-sourcing thing they're doing is disappointing since both models must have the same capabilities, even if it means restricted features (like 4K@120)

AnonD-558092, 10 Apr 2018The components business is great. You get to make money eve... moreAgreed. My S5 isn't exactly the latest model, but ISOCELL delivers as expected - and I'm coming from a Nokia N8 (some things better, some worse, but I'm satisfied). The components business allows the buyers to get quality components from better sources. If an iPhone owner enjoys his Samsung display, or an XYZ owner enjoys the Sony sensor, everyone benefits. Funny thing is that Samsung is now getting into the sensor business too. We'll see what happens.

When there's a new feature in a new ISOCELL sensor, expect it to be found on at least one new IMX sensor already.

Lol I remember back in late 2015, when Samsung badly wanted the IMX300 on the Xperia Z5 series to be on their Galaxy S7 series because of blazingly fast focusing speed.

Same as with SGS 6. But Isocell on my SGS 6 was better than Sony. Hope SGS 9- will have same camera as S9 with Isocell sensors.

Anonymous, 10 Apr 2018Samsung makes more money making chips than selling phones. The components business is great. You get to make money even if your products don't sell well, since your opponent buys you components. And Samsung owns the AMOLED and semiconductor component industry. Like Sony owns the optical sensors component industry. Like Qualcomm owns the essential telecommunication patents industry. Like I own the naming companies that own a part of the industry industry. Like the person that bothered to read this owns the reading weird comments industry.

And I have found that ISOCELL (Samsung in house) sensors are really great. My A5's pictures are wonderful on my 4K TV.
