LG Superfan, 11 Apr 2018Not related to instagram but why do phones need two cameras... moreIn order to do the bokeh effect, a camera needs to know the distance between the subject & the background. A single camera can't do that. With two cameras, the first camera focuses on the subject while the other camera focuses on the background, this gives it information on the distance between the two & that allows it to apply the blur effect to the background selectively while keeping the subject in focus.
As for how Google has done it with just one camera... They've done the entire process with software. They've made an advanced camera software which is able to carefully mark the subject & blur the background. As for why it's as good as dual-camera ones... well, Google's camera software is simply much better than others. That's also the reason why Google Pixel images turn out better than it's competitors even though the hardware itself is not as advanced as their's. I hope that explains it.

LG Superfan, 11 Apr 2018Not related to instagram but why do phones need two cameras... moreTypical smartphones follow how our eyes work; when both of your eyes are focusing on one object, the background blurs. But for Google, they rely A LOT, yes, I mean A LOT of work relied on the camera software. Basically they used their own machine learning "AI" to create the bokeh effect behind, which is very impressive since it is using only one camera, and yet it takes photos that are almost similar as high-end flagships that have dual cameras. It lies all into the camera software, if u got excellent camera software, u will get the type of results u see on Google smartphone cameras

It's nice to see Instagram being first to incorporate Google's now open source software from the Pixel 2, however I was hoping an independent developer might just create a standalone camera app... looks like iOS users with Instagram can now benefit from Google's technology without Apple using it.
