Seriously, it didn't even have to be a geek to understand ethic and moral of following legal rule, the who make the base code is already kind enough to make it open source, if not android may not even exist, what xiaomi had to do is just releasing the modified code, that's all, no payment needed, other company release it within days of launch of their device

Rooting your phone and loading a custom OS is not terribly hard - and it makes it so as long as your device is not failing in other aspects, it can last a much longer time.
You are right - the immediate impact of this is for the uber-geeks who know how to kernel and ROM develop. However, for the rest of us it means access to new ROMs with fantastic features and maintainability.
I have never lived in fear of losing a current OS. Hell, I have a Nexus 4 that got cutoff officially with... Jelly Bean, I believe (4.3). It's running 8.1. That happened because source was available, and as long as that happens, people can theoretically update it for quite some time.
It takes the reigns out of the company's hands and Google's to keep us updated. We can do it ourselves. Less waste, longer device life, and the roms often bake fantastic features that Google later copies into the main code of android.

tell this to the great guys over at mi.com,xda who have painstakingly created roms for devices like the redmi2 without any sources from xiaomi. as somebody already said, it's appreciated that xiaomi's doing this, but it's not enough i guess.

In the day that most OEMs who respect themselfs release kernel sources even a couple of days before launching a device or an update with the latest being a week or two after, Xiaomi gets applauded for making a commitment to release them in a window of 3 months? While this is better than not releasing them at all, (which is illegal so they get no points for doing it anyway) a tactic they used to follow in the not-distant-at-all past I don't see why people should really applaud them. This is still poor job.
