The high price of doing business with Iran - a country the USA has banned. You are dead in the water. Without access to the Android operating system (OS), ZTE is essentially forced out of the cellular handset business. Switching to another OS won't help them. Apple's OS is proprietary. The remaining cellular OS software have tiny market shares and little or no app stores. Apps are made for Google play or IOs. Sometimes, businesses can get away with not playing by the rules. This time, not.

I haven't kept track of ZTE for ahwile. But this may force them to innovate - source other chips, lower price points, maybe try an alternate OS like Windows Phone or Linux.
China may support the company as an F.U. to the US.
