Google previewed the ability for its Google Assistant to make calls on your behalf at Google I/O this week. Called Google Duplex, let's look at the science behind the magic.

Wow, scary and brilliant at the same time, future is here.

With the way Google is collecting voice nails from google Voice and our own voice signatures via assistant, it won’t be long that they can have duplex mimic your own voice.

And then suddenly people will be upset, just like how they are upset on a Facebook now.

Google Duplex is not a separate service, it's offered as part of Google Assistant; so when you ask Google Assistant to schedule an appointment or reservations for you, if the business has the aforementioned digital platforms, Google Assistant will use them, but if the business (usually local small shops) only accepts appointments or reservations via phone calls, then Google Duplex will be deployed by Google Assistant.
This was made sufficiently clear at Google I/O presentation.

As someone who has worked in speech recognition, self service automation and contact centers for 25 years, I will be instructing everyone I know to add a significant surcharge based on any activities created by Google duplex via voice.

There is no reason whatsoever for duplex to make a voice call and tie up a human when it easily can provide the same service digitally.

However, I have absolutely no problem with this if a company is not intelligent enough to provide services like booking appointments, changing schedules, etcetera that are very easily offered digitally. If you own a restaurant, get your menu out on the internet, get your deliveries via Uber Eats, book reservations via OpenTable.

If some numbskull still wants to use Google Duplex to make an automated voice call, then allow them to, but charge them a $50 surcharge for being a numbskull.

"imagine Google duplex calling if you were in an accident."
As a Chief Architect for OnStar, I'm laughing at the millennial who's clueless that this is been available for 20-plus years.

Youtube's "automatic captions" is still unusable, why would this work? In real life people are not straightforward like those examples suggest. Wouldn't it be cheaper for a company to make talking unnecessary than to train their staff to talk with robots?

It is an interesting practical development. I can see many useful aspects for people who have disabilities or for times you don't want to tap but talk instead. We all like to have devices or help that performs well. Natural evolution. I only Google Maps daily and rely on it which is free. So this is another step on being a smart -phone. Good o

Google is an advertisement company first and foremost, I imagine Google Duplex being used as a "telemarketer that never gets tired" or a spambot
