Flagship is a good choice in long run, but you might not have saved that much to afford today's flagships.
So, Midranges are way to go for many people.

I buy top of range every 2 and a half years, which is when it stops updating and I buy it at the month of its departure at a lower price

If I look back 4 years and compare the mobiles, there isn't big difference between mobiles for a normal person using it for typical use cases. May be few areas like infinity display, FaceID lock (which is nothing ne upw but different implementation), bigger storage, bumped up cameras shown improvements but that doesn't mean it had undergone frequent yearly upgrades to reach where it is now.
Consumers must take pledge that any flagship mobiles that costs around $550-600 or MORE must be used for a period of minimum three years.
Any midrange or entry level mobiles (LetV L1S is still running great without OS upgrade, software updates for more than 2.5 years) can be used for as long as it lasts.... Could be 8 months or 3 years. It will definitely start lagging if you keep upgrading the software

Xperia SP was a better deal than the Moto G back in 2013... It offered the Moto X specs for only $300...

I believe one more thing is very important to be considered. The amount of e-waste we generate. In the past 10 years i have owned 4 smartphones and 3 of them are now waste. In countries like India where e-waste disposal/recycling is very less, this will create a big problem in the near future. Kindly consider this as well when switching phones.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is midrange (cost about 200 euros)
Samsung Galaxy S9+ is flagship (cost about 900 euros)
the question is whether after 3,5 years Samsung Galaxy S9+ if it will be better than the corresponding Redmi Note 9. In battery certainly not, it's already inferior , It will obviously be lower in the other categories

Flagship for me. Quality would never lie.
I've several times tried midrange phones and not feeling satisfied. I don't mind paying more. Though I would wait for 6 months when it's price dropped.

Take Oneplus 3 with SD820 from 2016 for example and compare it with Oppo R15 Pro from 2018 with only SD660. Buying an old flagship doesnt always means better. Old flagship could actually be worse than a new powerful midranger. Even a SD636 device in 2018 can perform better than a SD810 device from few years ago. Just because you seeing that old shiny flagship got a low price tag you shouldnt be tempted.

Flagship is better. Easy to get screen protector, casing and accessories. And trade in price, sale price at the end of the term.
Mid ranger is better. Cheaper, can use without case or protector and do not feel scared of scratches or dents. Hard to find accessories and cases.. which will drive up the price.
Do note, if you change mid ranger every year.. means accessories cost need to be factored in when comparing.
Moving phone every year, means you need to setup again, face the unknown bugs and quirks of the new phone every year.
But for me its simple, buy best what you can afford, use until it broke, or worth the upgrade to the next best.

PROBLEM...flagships barely last two years...most flagships last less than one year...once in a while from any brand...pne pone is built supremely strong

I think we should buy an (upper) midranger phones for up to $400,they`re very good these days,for at least 90% of the users,they`ll be everything they`ll ever need...same thing with $200+ phones,fantastic value for your $$$.Why finance that awful greed???
