Counterclockwise: zooming in on smartphones with dual cameras

27 May 2018
It started out with a fad - 3D - but today dual cameras are the norm. Things are still in motion, though, some dual cams are better than others.

LG Superfan, 27 May 2018Why not a single camera with optical zoomMaybe because an optical zoom would affect the lens and phone thickness? Imagine a 3X optical zoom, with a 10 mm thick lens, plus the zooming mechanism, on a 20 mm thick phone, while you're complaining about the 10 mm thick Sony Experia.

LG Superfan, 27 May 2018Why not a single camera with optical zoomOppo unveiled a periscope-style camera with 5x optical zoom last year, but that's the last we heard of it. It's thinner than traditional zoom mechanisms like in the Galaxy Camera, but no one has built a phone with it yet (which usually means that it's either too expensive or doesn't work in real life).

They are as low as low can get. The only thing they are good at, is to make money out of lies. Well after all, they enjoy apple. So, they use apple polotics. Do nothing but make it sound big and very important. Now, make money out of it.

Why not a single camera with optical zoom

I don't have an808 but I would love to have one.
The sensor size and the features like lossless zoom really made it an unbelievable camera.

Geric.770, 27 May 2018Nokia was a legendary company, but DxOMark scored the PureV... moreI feel same....none of Nokia smartphones are in DXo mark with proper rating. Only namesake they put 3-4 smartphones in the list with low ratings. Because Nokia is not going pay for them. Whoever like which brand go for it....most of the ratings are biased in all over smartphones review websites. I fell most of the YouTubers comments bad review on nokia and they always promoting Chinese brand over Nokia. Whatever it I saw Nokia 7plus camera samples. I will buy it next month...

It is a shame only LG offers wide cameras, i am just not impressed with LG`s software and prices. Ohh, wait and Zenfone 5, maybe i will consider buying one

The only feature that can't be replicated by a batter main sensor is the wide angle camera.

You can always crop in if the picture quality is good enough but you can not go wider and add information that just isn't there.

Alternatively you could have a wider main camera coupled with a zoom camera.

This is Sharp's first Dual Stereoscopic Camera

                      https://m.gsmarena.com/sharp_aquos_sh80f-4207.php

I want to see more wide cameras instead of the useless zoom that has just slightly better quality than digital zoom.

Hotkolbas, 27 May 2018Nokia nailed it in one with the 808. Three cameras is getti... moreNokia was a legendary company, but DxOMark scored the PureView 808 by 61.
(DxO Labs is a biased and paid company!)
It was still a better, if not the best, camera than most midrange phone cameras though.

HTC the first Android phone. First dual camera smartphone. First smartphone to embrace the dual front speaker (boom) setup. Thank you htc.

Nokia nailed it in one with the 808. Three cameras is getting stupid if thou ask me., it's just a simple fix rather then researching better product

How about if Huawei or Samsung will able to put altogether: zoom, wide-angle, and primary camera?
                                That would be legendary.
