Sunday debate: Classic 16:9 vs. Taller screen ratios

03 June 2018
The tall screens started as a trend, but is there good reason behind it or is everybody just blindly following it?

As long as it doesn't have a NOtch, I don't really care about the display ratio.
Add a NOtch and I'm never going to get one.. Bleah!
I'd rather have full bezels than that..

Essential phone has the best ratio.

Luxor, 03 Jun 2018From my perspective the elongated screen appear much better... more18:9 standard becoming norm? but most device (TV, monitor, projector, movie projector) other than a phone are still mostly 16:9 or 21:9... and i never heard that a 18:9 had becoming a standard though

In Australia the tall skinny screens are not selling that well.
There are not too many people out there getting the tall skinny phones with edge to edge screens and are more likely to break easier.
We have not upgrades our Samsungs and dont plan to - not a fan of the 18:9 - not an upgrade.

xXENDER FREAKXx, 03 Jun 201818:9, 18.5:9, 19:9, different aspect ratios a thing now aft... moreUmm no, it's not like only because the smartphone display movement to 2:1, most media industry would move into it too. It's not at that simple.

Anonymous, 03 Jun 201818:9, 18,5:9 and 19:9 are just ways to provide less scree... moreless screen? but my fingers are on pain to reach the top...shorter than 16:9, like the oldschool 4:3 or 5:4 are better, giving shorter size in the same width...

Seriously, but what's future on 18:9?

It's not like those display manufacture couldn't make a longer than it. Oh, if you said it's a future, then what about the 21:9 LG BL40, released about 9 yrs ago?

16:9 because it's standard, does no problem, and calling 18:9 a future is more like calling the removing of 3.5mm jack is a future too. Sad.

Samsung and LG created this 18:9 small footprint and narrow screens, and the rest of the herd followed them like a bunch of freaked-out buffalos. And we customers suffer half-baked screens proportions in post-2016 pricy flagships devices PLUS the notch thingy. Double Whammy.

I think the idea should be shrink the bezels, but not making a so tall screen but retaining the bezels, ah, and just for your respective knowledge something that is wasted makes no sense, as the black bars.

on the other hand 6" phone 16:9 would be terribly wide and hard to reach all icons
prefer 18.5:9 bc its thin to hold with my large hands and wont be difficult to carry slim phone

While the explanation is sound. I do believe there is a limit.

No point increasing beyond 16:9 for the sake of increasing.. and destroy user experience in other usages.

Not everyone use social all the time..

we've all been used to 16:9 ratio but i think for mobile devices there is a limitation which is the average hand size ..... and a bigger screen means a wider phone. as much as i prefer the 16:9 ratio ..... i gotta admit when i was choosing between the mate 10 and the mate 10 pro ...... the mate 10 pro just felt better on my hand.

18:9 is idiotic and makes no sense. No matter how you use your phone, how wide the screen is matters just as much as how tall it is. And 18:9 just makes it less balanced.

Personally I prefer the 16:9 ratio. It's perfectly usable. And like many users said, no "black bars" in the sides.
It also looks normal when gaming.

I like the screen ratio in-sync with other devices such as TV and youtube etc. so that I can fully use the screen instead of with two black bars (when viewing videos) which makes the phone longer for no purpose

Consistency is important so that we do not waste precious resources creating and solving unnecessary compatibility issues. Stick to the KISS principle.

16:9 was cool until the on-screen buttons came. 18:9 gave us our screen estate back.
Between 16:9 with physical buttons and 18:9 with on-screen buttons I'll choose the former. But 16:9 with on-screen buttons is garbage, and it's luckily dying.
Oh, and 18:9 lets us have more screen estate with the same width, which is cool.
