Desktop aren't going extinct because of Laptops. Laptops aren't going extinct because of Tablets. Tablets aren't* going extinct because of Phones. Phones aren't going extinct because of Wearables.

So there is great advantage to have an Ecosystem that scales up from Desktops down to Wearables, or at-least from Laptops to Phones. Google is the first to achieve this with the AOSP 4.0.3 Ice-cream Sandwhich** that ran on TV Boxes to Phones, in a quirky sort of way. Microsoft is the first to make this proprietary with Windows 8 (which is practically an unfinished Beta test). They later tried with a much better "Unified OS" Windows on Arm running QSD 835 chips and Windows 10 Pro alternately.

However, as has been said before it is NOT about who does it first, it is about who does it WELL. If Apple can somehow merge iOS-OSX into a successful ecosystem, then yes both Microsoft and Google will feel very envious in-deed.

*maybe they are, except the iPad-series
**yes, I haven't forgotten about Chromebooks and their ability to support Android Apps

Apple already semi solved the issue of gaming with Bootcamp. They just need to make it easier to boot up, if they can make a "Gaming mode" which immediately boots up Bootcamp, the problem goes away.

Geric.770, 05 Jun 2018macOS' weakness is the lack of support on most platform gam... moreThat's really not more productive. Windows has used touch and mobile app support for years. It's not catching on as it turns out nothing beats 104 physical keys and a mouse. Try remembering hundreds of gestures to get as productive and figure out a way to do multiple of them at the same time... Not happening in any reality.
Also, I'm not talking about iPhone "AAA" but real AAA, everything you can buy for a PC, which is pretty much anything you can imagine.
The reason Apple is adding iOS support for MacOS is because MacOS is a dead system. Devs are tired of wasting time on developing for a platform with little return. Sort of like the reverse of Windows desktop and Windows Phone. So, last attempt to save a dying market is to "tease" with phone apps, which will fail as bad.

Oh no did they really extend the silly idea that files that are of the same type should be kept together!!! That is the mess we got in the windows taskbar since they added this silly 'grouping'.

It ONLY really works if you ONLY use your computer for one thing!!!

If you do multiple projects on the same pc - and almost everybody does that - you get things that have absolutely nothing to do with each other mixed... Just because two files are text, there is NOTHING that says that the CONTENT have ANYTHING in common. However you often got multiple file types that belong together for the same thing. E.g some images, a doc and a spreadsheet.

On the Ios thing, I wonder why aPple don't just emulate it? For almost all purposes you would expect the cpu/gpu of the mAc to be so much faster that it could easily do that - thus removing the need for a port of the app. Sure it is nice that they offer the option of porting, especially for complex apps, but does seem like overkill for a lot of simple apps.

But, I find the ecosystem more productive because you can use the apps from your iPhone to any Mac. Nice.

Yeah, I bet Microsoft is envious of iOS getting Angry Birds 2.

                      iOS apps support is huge.
                      Windows, again, is left behind.
For years MS tried to bring apps to Windows.
Apple on the other side with millions of Apps in appstore could bring all the apps to the desktop as simple as the click on a button.
